1 Adobe illustrator

2 Lesson Objectives To explain numeric grades
To recap how to use shapes and compound shapes To understand how to use the pen tool to create rounded edges All students will use the pen tool to draw a shape Most students will edit points with the white arrow Some students will experiment with turning corners into curves

3 The illustrator interface
Open Adobe Illustrator. Go to FILE>NEW Add title : Dinosaur Size: select A4. Orientation: Landscape

4 The illustrator interface
In your google classroom book – annotate the 3 bits you must fill in for each drawing.

5 The illustrator interface
Is very similar to Photoshop. Ensure you have the “essential” panel showing Some of the icons on the left you should already recognise, others will be brand new in illustrator

6 Starter: What can you remember?
You all used illustrator at the start of Year 8. Lets see what you can remember. Can you create any/all of these shapes? Hint: Look for this tool A B C

7 Compound shapes 2 3 4 C 5 C+ 6 B+ 7 A 8 A* 9 Can draw shapes which have various different number of sides Can edit symbols to enhance the image Can create original shapes using the pen tool Can create a compound shape using the shape builder tool Can create an effective compound shape using the path finder tool which enhances the design Can use the white arrow to alter shapes including turning corners into curves Can add and remove points of a shape using the Pen tool Can utilise symbols and shapes to create a complex image which is wholly suited to SOAP Compound shapes are used to create original shapes that merge together regular shapes. They’re useful when you want to create something more interesting or effective than a normal rectangle or circle.

8 The Pen Tool The pen tool is a useful tool on Illustrator because it allows create original shapes. Whenever you click your mouse you create a corner, which creates a node. These are blue squares which pin the shape to the canvas.

9 Tip: Colouring a shape When you use the Pen tool you need to ensure that you join your dots up, and click the first node you put down. Otherwise, illustrator presumes that you want to join them up anyway, and you may end up with a shape you don’t want.

10 Task 1: Draw a dinosaur Draw the basic shape of a dinosaur. Try and use a few nodes as possible! DO NOT WORRY if it doesn’t look much like one at the minute - it’s not an art lesson! Remember to join your shape up.

11 Tweak your dinosaur White arrow Click to select a node
Click it again and drag it into position.

12 Tweak your dinosaur I’ve added lots of extra nodes down his back And then used the white arrow to pull them into spikes You might find that you want to delete a node because you don’t need it, or you might want to add extra notes to give you more freedom. Click and hold on the Pen tool and you get more options to add or delete the nodes.

13 Adding extra nodes to the face gives it more of a dinosaur shape
The hand is more claw like The tail has a dangerous spike on it.

14 Curve or corner? Your dinosaur will still look a bit rigid because its made with straight lines. All of the nodes we have drawn we can now decide if we want them to be curves or corners. I want my dinosaur to have a fat belly rather than a pointy one. When I click on the node on his belly I get more options at the top of the screen You can convert the node into a corner and it will curve it.

15 Editing the handles Two handles appear on the corner which allow you to edit the shape. The longer the wider the curve The shorter the narrower the curve

17 Try for yourself Choose one of these animals to try and recreate!

18 On your work book Snip your dinosaur or other farm animals onto your work book. Using your image explain how you used the following The pen tool Curved corners The white arrow Level 6 or above? Justify why you chose to use that tool to create the effect you wanted.
