1 R.N.A. & Transcription

2 What is r.n.a.? Ribose Nucleic Acid
Like D.N.A. it is named after the sugar in the backbone Responsible for moving genetic information from DNA in the nucleus to the site of protein synthesis in the cytosol Typically a single stranded molecule

3 Thymine is typically not a part of R. N. A
Thymine is typically not a part of R.N.A.  The N- base Uracil replaces Thymine and binds to Adenine (U-A)

4 Types of r.n.a. There are three types of RNA, each serving a different function 1. Messenger RNA (mRNA) Single uncoiled chain Responsible for carrying genetic information from DNA in nucleus to cytosol

5 Types of rna 2. Transfer RNA (tRNA)
Single chain, folded into hair-pin shape Binds to specific amino acids*

6 Types of rna 3. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) Most abundant form of RNA
RNA nucleotides in a globular form rRNA makes up ribosomes, where proteins are made

7 In your note booklet Write Down the key differences between DNA and RNA Your Choice! Venn Diagram Compare and Contrast Chart Diagrams Etc.

8 Almost everyday, we write down information that is important to us
Just as we write, or scribe, information that is important to us, our cells do the same.

9 transcription Recall: Major function of RNA is to transfer the genetic information from DNA in the nucleus, to the cytosol (the site of protein production) This is the process known as TRANSCRIPTION Figure 10.7 Latin: Scribere- To write, Trans- Across

10 transcription RNA Polymerase Primary transcription Enzyme
Initiates transcription by binding to specific regions of DNA known as “Promoters” Promoters: Mark the beginning of a single gene Like in Replication, it begins to add complementary RNA nucleotides to the newly formed RNA molecule Same base pairing rules, except Uracil replaces Thymine

11

12 transcription All three types of RNA are transcribed in this process
Transcription continues one nucleotide at a time until RNA polymerase reaches the Termination Signal Region of nucleotides that marks the end of a gene All three types of RNA are transcribed in this process

13 transcription Following the transcription process, the RNA molecules will move from the nucleus to the cytosol, where protein synthesis will take place

14 To Do now Finish any Journal entry you may be behind on Section 10.2 Review

15 Next class Finishing off the DNA Journey- How proteins, and us, are made! Treasure Hunt!
