2 Britain Party Struggles Irish Independence
Labour Party vs. Liberal Party Labour Party promoted a gradual move towards socialism represented workers Liberal Party made some social legislation, but represented middle-class business interests Irish Independence In 1914 parliament passed a home-rule bill when the war began it was pushed aside Easter 1916 –Easter Rising militant Irish Nationalist launched a revolt against British rule 1919 IRA began a guerilla war against British forces In 1922 moderates in Ireland and Britain reached an agreement and most of Ireland became the self-governing Irish Free State The Protestant northern counties remained under British rule

Fear of radicals and communism in US Fed demands to limit immigration Passed laws to limit immigration from Europe, adding to limits already placed on China and Japan

4 New Foreign Policy Maginot Line
Massive fortifications built along the French border with Germany France wanted to make sure the Treaty of Versailles was strictly enforced Kellogg-Briand Pact Renounced war as an instrument of national policy Pursued disarmament US, Britain, France, & Japan all reduced navies Germany joined the League of Nations in 1926
