6 Rationale for mental agility
5 + 4 = 9 4 x 2 = 8 ‘The ability to calculate in your head is an important part of mathematics. It is also an essential part of coping with society’s demands and managing everyday events.’ City of Edinburgh Council Mental Agility Guidelines 2014 0.1, 0.2, 0.3… ½ of 6?

7 Mental agility at Stockbridge Primary School
Why teach mental strategies? - deeper understanding of number - develops children's ability to manipulate numbers - gives children more options at their disposal when asked to solve a complex problem - therefore increased resilience and confidence.

8 SEAL (stages of early arithmetic learning)
Core maths scheme p1-p4 Develops a range of strategies to help children become more efficient in solving number problems Add 10 then take 1 Counting on from 36. 36+9 = 45 Empty number line Partitioning 9 e.g. add 4 then add 5. Counting on starting at 1.

9 Stockbridge Counts New whole school maths scheme developed to increase mental agility. Directly linked to the SEAL programme Will run from p1 – p7 with progression. E.g. forward and backwards counting in p1 could be within 20 whilst p6 are counting in fractions. Whole school will focus on the same strand at the same time. Maths homework will link to the school focus strand with a focus on maths homework being more interactive and completed in short bursts daily.

10 Stockbridge Counts ‘A Rainbow of Numeracy Skills’
Counting forwards and backwards Number after and before Number recognition Sequencing and ordering; number lines; equivalences Combining and partitioning numbers & place value Multiplication and division; fractions, decimal fractions and percentages; ratio and proportion Addition and subtraction
