Open Morning Friday 21 st November 2014

1. Ability to count on and count backward 2. Ability to use number lines and number tracks ( horizontally /vertically and know fractions have a place on the line) 3. Ability to partition a number- take any number and split it using place value. 4. Understanding of number bonds to 10 (Ability to bridge and adjust ( 9+4 is the same as saying 9+1 leaving 3 left over = 10+3 or 13) 1. Multiplication – (teaching connections through multiplication, 2x then 4x table, 5x then 10 x table – triangulating tables facts – teaching the four facts )

Why are we changing? Looking at assessment information there was a clear need to improve children’s fluency and mental recall of number facts to ensure greater automation of number. It was therefore a priority to improve mental maths at Bellyeoman

 Core Numeracy using SEAL and CLIC  Wider Maths will continue alongside Core Numeracy – (Shape, Position and Movements, Measure, Information Handling, Problem Solving, Word Problems and Multi-methods, Maths in a context)  Nursery, P1 and P1/2 will be following the SEAL Approach to Early Core Numeracy  P2 – P7 will be following the Big Maths or CLIC Approach to Core Numeracy

SEAL Approach in Early Level SEAL = Staged Early Arithmetical Learning The scheme provides a comprehensive and integrated approach to learning, teaching and assessment which provides teachers with a clear direction and purpose.

Where has it originated from? SEAL is currently being used by a number of councils in Scotland. It is based on the Maths Recovery Programme from Australia.

Six Aspects of Core Numeracy Teaching 1.Forward and Backward Number Sequences 2.-Numerals – recognising and naming 3.-Counting – forward and backward 4.-Patterns – spatial, domino, paired patterns 5.-Finger patterns 6.-Temporal Sequences – leading to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division These 6 aspects are covered within the week in short daily sessions

Partitioning Visual Patterns – Domino: 3 to 6

5.3 – Red Rows of Dots
