1 Tidy everything for next group
Instructions For each mini investigation: Read the instructions and predict the results (2 min) Carry out the investigation (5 min) Record and explain your results (3 min) Tidy everything for next group

2 Coloured ice cube and warm water
Warm/Hot Water

3 Coloured ice cube and warm water
Explanation: As the ice cube melts the water sinks to the bottom of the beaker because it is colder than the other water. Because the ice cube is coloured we can see the movement taking place. What type of energy transfer is this?

4 Ice cube and boiling water

5 What type of energy transfer is this?
Explanation: Hot liquids rise; because the water is heated at the top of the test tube none of the heat travels down to the ice cube so it doesn’t melt. What type of energy transfer is this?

6 Comparing Heaters

7 Comparing Heaters Explanation:
Only the test tubes with the heaters at the bottom cause a large rise in temperature. Because hot gases and liquids rise the test tubes with the heaters at the top do not transfer heat throughout the test tube. What type of heat transfer is this?

8 Smoke Box 8

9 The heated air rises through the ‘chimney’ above it
Firstly the candle heats the air around it heated air 9

10 This air is heated when it reaches the candle
Cool air comes in through the other chimney to take the place of the heated air This air is heated when it reaches the candle 10

11 Now we have a flow of air, in through one chimney, out through the other
11

12 Normally this convection current can’t be seen
12

13 However, if a piece of smoking paper is used, the movement of the smoke shows us how the air is flowing 13

14 Smoke Box Explanation:
Smoke is sucked into the smoke box due to the convection current produce by the burning candle. What type of heat transfer is this?
