1 Preparing Prints for Salons
Salon Committee: Jerry Howland Kevin Corrigan Al Kiecker

2 Your Mounted Photograph …
… should be presented in a manner just as if you were submitting it for exhibition in a gallery. The presentation of your mounted photograph can have an influence on the judge and impact your score.

3 There are MANY Ways To Mount a Print
We will show you just two …

4 Overview How to mount and mat Labeling What to watch out for Un-matted

5 How to Mount a Print Without a Mat

6 Materials and Tools Mat board or Foam core
Slightly larger than the print Spray Adhesive 3M Repositional Photo Mount (Spray Can) Very Sharp Knife Good Straight Edge

7

8 Process Cut mount board slightly larger than the print, or plan to trim both print and mount to final size Apply spray to the mount board Up and down and across Do it in a well ventilated area: outdoors! Apply print to the mount board Trim the edge

9 Apply Print Board with adhesive sprayed onto the board

10 Reposition as Necessary
Note: Read directions for time limit.

11 Trim No border. Trim the photo. No part of the mount can extend beyond the edge of the photographic paper (it is sticky with glue) Part of the artistic presentation can be a border, but the border must be part of the print itself.

12 Hint … To avoid tearing the foam core, keep the knife blade angle low with respect to the foam core. Make multiple passes Very Low Angle

13 Weight the Mounted Print

14 Watch for … No glue where you don’t want it! Back of mount
On the print Edges

15 How to Mount a Print With a Mat

16 Materials and Tools Mount board or Foam Core Mat board
Pre-cut DIY Custom Cut (requires mat cutter) Mat board Archival “Linen” Tape Archival double sided tape or buttons Scissors Sharp knife Straight edge

17

18 Hinge Mat to Mount Butt top edges together
This is the inside of the mat/mount combination Note: Blue tape for illustration purposes only

19 Hint To prevent mount board from showing around the edge of the mat,
have the backing mount slightly smaller than the mat - trim if necessary. Note: white edge is the mat, blue is the mount seen from the back.

20 Put Print Inside

21 Center the Photo

22 Hold photo in place Use soft weight that won’t scratch your photo. Size the weight so that you can open the mat.

23 Attaching Print to Mat/Mount
Print can be attached with tape to either the back of the mat, or to the backing mount.

24 Attach Print to Mat Lift top corner of print and apply tape to back of the print. Note: sticky side will be up Apply tape to both top corners. This approach results in the print being attached to the mat. Note: tape does not extend beyond the sides, only the top. The print is free to “hang” between the mat and the backing mount.

25 Attach Print to Mount Lift top corner of print and apply tape to back of the print. Note: sticky side will be up Apply tape to both top corners. Apply tape “T” to the backing mount. This approach results in the print being attached to the mount board.

26 Apply Buttons Apply double sided buttons to both lower corners to attach mat to the mount, but not the print itself. Note: this is optional, if the mounted print is in a clear plastic envelope.

27 Finished product Almost ready to submit to the salon committee.

28 Labeling On the back of the print:
Title Your Salon Number Salon Code Placed in upper left corner so that the judge can easily determine the orientation of the photograph.

29 All Ready for Submitting to the Salon Committee

30 Please Help the Salon Committee
Ensure that there is no glue or stickiness on the front or back of the mounted photograph. This is especially true if you reuse your mats and mounts. Use the same title on your print and the digital copy. Legible handwriting.

31 For More Info Use a search engine for “mounting a photograph”, “how to mount a photograph”, etc. This will return many acceptable variations
