Presentation on theme: "Basic Structure of the Human Body"— Presentation transcript:

1 Basic Structure of the Human Body

2 Anatomy: study of the form and structure of an organism
Physiology: study of the processes of living organisms, or why and how they work Pathophysiology: study of how disease occurs and the responses of living organisms to disease processes.

3 Pathophysiology Diseases can be:
Congenital – acquired during development or from birth Inherited – transmitted from parents to child genetically Infectious – caused by a pathogen (germ) Degenerative – caused by a deterioration of the function or structure of body tissues and organs either by aging or lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise

4 Protoplasm – basic substance of all life
Protoplasm – basic substance of all life. The material that makes up all living things. Cell – basic unit of structure and function of all living things

5 Differentiate between anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

6 Application: After reading Pgs , draw a diagram of the cell. Label and describe the function of the following: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, chromatin, centrioles, Golgi apparatus, vacuoles, lysosome, pinocytic vesicles

7 Application: Read pgs. 137-139. Write a paragraph explaining:
- what are stem cells? - what type of research is being done using stem cells? - why is this a medical ethics issue?

8

9 Application After reading the information on pg 139 on Tissues, create a foldable of the 4 types of tissues including their locations and functions

10 Tissues When cells of the same type join together for a common purpose they form tissues. Tissues: 60-99% water Water substance called tissue fluid Dehydration – insufficient tissue fluid Edema – too much tissue fluid (swelling)

11 Nerve Tissue: controls and communicates
Made up of neurons Transmits messages throughout body Ex: nerves, brain, spinal cord

12 Epithelial Tissue: secretes and protects
Covers surface of body and is main tissue of skin Forms the lining of intestinal, respiratory, circulatory, and urinary tracts as well as other body cavities forms body glands which produce secretions

13 Connective Tissue: support and connect
Supporting fabric of organs Classified as hard or soft Adipose tissue – soft, fatty tissue Fibrous connective tissue – ligaments and tendons Hard – bones and cartilage – osseous tissue Liquid connective tissue – blood and lymph – vascular tissue

14 Muscle Tissue: move and protect
Skeletal – attaches to bones and provides for movement Cardiac – causes heart to beat Visceral (smooth) – present in walls of respiratory, digestive, urinary tract, and blood vessels

15 Application Read information on pg 140 “Organs and Systems”
How are cells, tissues, organs, and systems related?

16 Two or more tissues join together to perform a special function are called an organ.
Organs and other body parts joined together to perform a particular function are called a system (body system) Pg 140 for list of body systems
