By: Samuel Bieker and Sabra Stettler

Description Hashish is a more potent form of marijuana, made by collecting and compressing trichome's in the plant. The chemical make up of THC, which produces the high in hashish, is C21H30O2.

How it's acquired In most of the U.S. hashish is illegal, but some states will distribute it for medical reasons.

Classification Hashish is classified as a stimulant, as it releases dopamine when it is used. It is also a very mild hallucinogen.

Street terms There are two street terms for hashish, hash, and bubble melt hash. The second refers to water purifies hashish which resembles a paste, rather than a solid.

Ways it is ingested Most of the time hashish is ingested through smoking it, either in a bong, pipe, or joint. Hashish can also be ingested orally if it is mixed into food.

Similar drugs The drug most similar to hashish is marijuana. Hashish is just a more potent form of marijuana, making both of their effects similar, but marijuana is usually weaker, or lasts less time.

Medicinal  Although hashish itself does not have any medical uses, marijuana does. Some medicinal uses of marijuana are to treat muscle spasms, nausea from chemotherapy, seizure disorders, and Crohn's disease.

Psychological effect Hashish has many of the same effects as marijuana does, but due to it being a more potent form there are even more effects. First of all is the distortion of time and space. Using hashish often causes people to not be aware of how much time has passed. Also this can be dangerous when driving as users usually don't realize the speed at which they are travelling in a vehicle. Another effect of these distortions is that sports become increasingly hard to play, meaning athletes performance could drop after one use. After using hashish many people develop lazy tendencies causing them to give up hobbies, or slack and procrastinate on work. Hashish also can lead to a reduced ability to understand what is read and heard, making an education extremely difficult.

Physiological effect Hashish has been linked to a number of problems in pregnant woman, such as early births, death in an infants first few days of life, and an increase in birth defects of hands and feet. Just like normal cigarettes smoking hashish can lead to a number of lung problems such as bronchitis and lung infections, as well as an increased chance of getting lung cancer. Hashish also affects the heartbeat of the user, increasing their heart rate by 20 to 50 beats, which can cause heart attacks in people with heart disease.

Duration of effects Many effects of hashish vary depending on how it enters the system, and how often it is used. Typically the short term effects such as the rush of euphoria, the increased heartbeat, and the distortion of time will last about 2 hours if it is smoked, and 4 to 6 hours if orally ingested. Long term effects such as the lung problems can last for the rest of a persons life.

Dependence Although hashish is not physically addictive, it is psychologically. Chronic users often build tolerance to it, causing the to use more every use. The THC in hashish causes people to constantly use it to feel happy. But, research has shown that long term use does not effect dopamine production in any way.

Myth Smoking hashish is worse for your lungs than cigarettes: According to a 2012 study this was proved to be false. Although long term use can damage a users lungs, people who smoke it only a couple of times will not be affected. Additionally cigarettes are even worse long term than hashish.
