11/21 We will be enjoying some examples of entropy and how some reactions can not easily be reversed. Concepts: When food is cooked, it often locks the chemical bonds in place and it often can’t be undone to its original state….unless you run it through the complex biological machines that made the ingredients first place. Some chemical reactions are spontaneous. This is because the free energy available is greater than the energy needed to start the reaction. Many chemical reactions are reversible if the products can interact with each other. This usually requires some input of energy because one of the reactions is not spontaneous. Living things spend their entire lives undoing this process to release energy and utilize the molecules to rebuild the ingested food into useful material for the cells. Living things need to ingest materials and energy because all objects in our universe “fall apart” because the universe naturally increases entropy. Entropy involves objects changing from its initial state to a different possible state. Some people call this disorder since often this means things that were once attached are no longer attached but moving around randomly.

Calculate how much of each type of lipid you are ingesting on a typical day. There are food calculators that can estimate lipids. List the recommendations of fat intake according to USDA and the American Heart Association. (make sure that you include intake recommendations for all three categories of lipids) .
