1 Notes and Skills Practice
Square Roots Notes and Skills Practice

2 Square Chart On your graph paper, create a horizontal table with 2 rows and 26 columns Label the rows “side” and “area” Then trace one box just under the left-hand side of the table Fill the side length and area for the square you traced onto the chart

3 Square Chart Draw a new square around the first one that has a side length of 2 units Fill this square’s side length and area onto the chart Continue this process, adding one unit each time and drawing a square until you have filled out your whole table

4 What is a square root? A square root is the inverse of squaring a number (or taking it to the second power) It is related to the area of squares

5 Area of Squares A square is special rectangle in which all sides are equal A = b · h but because base and height are equal A of square = s · s or A = s²

6 Finding the Side of a Square
A square root is like being given the area of a square and finding the side length A square with an area of 36 would have a side length of 6 A square with an area of 81 would have a side length of 9

7 Square Roots and Area The square root symbol is #
25 means “if the area of a square is 25, what is the side length?” 25 =5

8 Notes – Calculating Square Roots
A square root is the inverse of squaring a number (to the second power) You need to figure out what number times itself will give you the amount underneath the square root symbol
