2 Tradition compels me to start off with a good joke
Tradition compels me to start off with a good joke. Unfortunately as a lot of you know, I do not know any good jokes, so in the interest of brevity I will just move on.. Thanks for attending the inaugural GRITS. The Organizing Committee has worked diligently to establish an informal forum for you, the programmers, developers, analysts, and system engineers, to learn more about what other people at IPAC are doing and how you might be able to apply some of these ideas and techniques to your own projects. Lessons learned are also an important aspect of today’s presentations for as Yogi Berra would say "We make too many wrong mistakes".

3 One of our most important challenges is to provide solutions to today’s problems that are long-lived, evolvable, malleable, and even autonomic in order to sneak up on the solution for the future. We need to design for the future - ‘the unknowable unknowns.” The proliferation and significance of new technologies demands a new focus from us — one that remains rigorous and technically oriented, but is simultaneously devoted to integrating engineering design, theory, and practice within the social and organizational contexts in which these our information systems and solution will be employed.. that is, extract the important engineering problems from our science community.

4 All this simply means is that you must be at the current state of knowledge and you must be able to communicate with your customer

5 I would like to recognize the people who have made this meeting possible
Pat Patterson, Niles McELVENEY and Rosanne Scholey for logistic and planning support Frank Masci, Kelly Plummer, Steve Schurr, Cate Liu, Xiuqin Wu, the organizing committee.

6 Trey Roby Lijun Zhang Bob Narron Tim Conrow Frank Masci Bruce Berriman
John Good Tung Nguyen Mike Khuong Peter Plavchan Carl Grillmair Mike Kolar Bill Reach Rajib Saha Mike Brown David Ciardi Rick Ebert Tom Cwik Finally, this symposium would not be possible without the presenters who are taking the time to tell you about their work. You job is to match the speaker with their inner geek!

7 By Woody Allen’s standards, you are all now successful for Eighty percent of success is showing up. Have a good day, I hope you enjoy the talks, meet new IPACers and learn something useful. Here is Cate to get us started with the first session.
