1 The Hydrological Cycle L/O – To investigate the cycles in an ecosystem
Tuesday, 13 November 2018 The Hydrological Cycle L/O – To investigate the cycles in an ecosystem Starter 5 in 5 5 categories, 5 words for each, in 5 minutes 5 stores of Carbon 5 transfer processes in the Carbon Cycle 5 types of climate 5 types of weather 5 countries with a desert biome in Set up books

2 L/O – To investigate the cycles in ecosystems
The Hydrological Cycle Task – Start at a station, roll the dice. Follow the instruction related to the number of the die. On your water cycle identify the destination and the process that transfers you from one part of the cycle to another Destination How are you transferred? Four rows for now but you will want to add more as you move around the cycle Key Concept – Systems Related Concept - Processes Global Context – Orientation in Time and Space

3 L/O – To investigate the cycles in ecosystems
What did you discover? Processes that transfer water Stores of Water Key Concept – Systems Related Concept - Processes Global Context – Orientation in Time and Space

4 L/O – To investigate the cycles in ecosystems
Using your table describe and explain how water is cycled within the biosphere. (8 marks) This answer has only achieved 4 marks. Water is moved around the biosphere through lots of different processes. For example water may start in the ocean and will move to the atmosphere (1). At the atmosphere it turns into clouds and then it will rain down on the earths surface (2) . It then goes into rivers, lakes, and oceans; It might also go into the soil, plants or groundwater (1) Reflection Why is this not an 8 mark answer? What would you do to improve it? Key Concept – Systems Related Concept - Processes Global Context – Orientation in Time and Space

5 L/O – To investigate the cycles in ecosystems
Using your table describe and explain how water is cycled within the biosphere. (8 marks) Key Concept – Systems Related Concept - Processes Global Context – Orientation in Time and Space

6 L/O – To investigate the cycles in ecosystems
Peer Assessment Using your table describe and explain how water is cycled within the biosphere. (8 marks) An 8 mark answer should…. Describe – say where the water moves from and to e.g. water is transferred from the ocean to the atmosphere (1) and Explain – says why and how it moves e.g. because the sun warms the ocean which causes the water the evaporate (1). To get 8 marks, they need 4 descriptions and 4 transfer processes Key Concept – Systems Related Concept - Processes Global Context – Orientation in Time and Space

7 L/O – To develop our skills in using maps and atlases
Task – Locate the places and features on the maps, use the atlases and your planner to help you. Tip: x and y are canals, their names are the Panama canal and the Suez canal but which is which? Places, features, landmarks

8 Soil 1 The roots of the plants absorb the water from the soil
The roots of the plants absorb the water from the soil Go to : Living plants 2 The soil is saturated and the water runs - off into the river. Go to : River 3 or 4 Water infiltrates through the soil into the ground. Go to : Ground water 5 or 6 The sun heats the soil. Water is evaporated into the atmosphere and condenses to form clouds. Go to : Atmosphere

9 Living Plants 1 - 2 Water leaves the plant in the form of water vapour through a process of transpiration. Go to : Atmosphere 3 - 4 Water is used by the plant and remains in the plant cells. Go to : Stay at living plants  5 The sun heats the soil. Water is evaporated and condenses to form clouds. Go to : Atmosphere 6 The plant is consumed by an animal. Go to : Animal

10 River 1 Water from the river flows into the lake. Go to : Lake 2
Water from the river flows into the lake. Go to : Lake 2 Water infiltrates into the ground. Go to : Ground water 3 Water from the river flows into the ocean. Go to : Ocean 4 Water from the river infiltrates the soil on the river banks Go to : Soil 5 An animal drinks the water from the river. Go to : Animal 6 The sun heats up the river, water evaporates and condenses to form clouds. Go to : Atmosphere

11 Atmosphere 1 Water condenses and falls as precipitation on to the soil. Go to : Soil 2 Water condenses and falls as snow on mountains. Go to : Snow 3 Water condenses and falls into a lake as precipitation. Go to : Lake 4 Water condenses and falls as precipitation into the ocean Go to : Ocean 5 Water condenses and falls as precipitation into the river Go to : River 6 Water remains in the atmosphere. Go to : Stay at Atmosphere

12 Lake 1 Water infiltrates through the soil into the ground.
Water infiltrates through the soil into the ground. Go to : Ground water 2 An animal drinks the water from the lake. Go to : Animal 3 - 4 Water from the lake flows into the river. Go to : River 5 The sun heats up the lake. Water evaporates and condenses to forms clouds. Go to : Atmosphere 6 Water remains in the lake. Go to : Stay at lake

13 Groundwater 1 - 2 Water filters up through soil and into the river
Go to: river  3 – 4 Water remains underground. Go to: Stay at groundwater 5 – 6 Water flows underground towards the sea or ocean. Go to: Ocean

14 Animal 1 - 2 Water is excreted from the animal. Go to : Soil 3 - 6
Water is respired or it evaporates from the animal and condenses into the cloud. Go to: Atmosphere

15 Oceans 1 – 2 The sun heats up the ocean. Water evaporates and condenses to form clouds. Go to : Atmosphere 3 - 6 Water remains in the ocean. Go to : Stay at Ocean

16 Snow and Ice 1 - 2 Ice melts and the water infiltrates into the ground
Go to: Ground water 3 Sun makes the ice melt. It evaporates and condenses into the clouds. Go to: Atmosphere 4 - 5 Ice melts and flows into the rivers. Go to: River 6 Snow and ice frozen on the mountain. Go to: Stay at Snow and Ice
