7 Self-defense only, please
As of July 1st , 2016 Students and employees, 18 years and older, at Georgia’s public colleges and universities can now legally carry stun guns on campus. That includes in buildings, dorms and classrooms of the 29 institutions of the University System of Georgia and the 22 institutions in the Technical College System of Georgia. The stun guns allowed under the law, formally known as electroshock weapons, must be models that are commercially available, and not the more powerful weapons used by police and other law enforcement officers. Self-defense only, please

8 CAMPUS CARRY As of July 1st , 2017
As is the case with individuals possessing a driver’s license being expected to know the rules of the road in each state he or she drives through, such is the responsibility of the handgun license holder to understand the rules and regulations associated with his or her Georgia Weapons Carry License (WCL) in the state of Georgia The responsibility to know and comply with the law rests with the license holder. It is the responsibility of the license holder/gun owner to ensure that they have received gun safety training on proper loading, use and carry (including concealed carry) of a firearm. Colleges (including their police or security departments) will not provide firearms training to anyone other than employed sworn police officers.

9 OVERVIEW You must be 21 or over (unless an active member of the military). It applies to everyone on campus-- student, faculty, staff, contractor or visitor. Applies only to handguns (revolvers and pistols) (No Long Guns) And you must have valid GA Weapons Carry License (WCL) or a weapons carry license or permit from a reciprocal state provided that the license carrier is not a resident of GA. If they become a GA resident they must obtain a GA carry license (active military exception) Quick Facts On

10 OVERVIEW House Bill 280 To amend Part 3 of Article 4 of Chapter 11 of Title 16 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to carrying and possession of firearms, so as to authorize the carrying and possession of handguns in certain manners by weapons carry license holders in certain buildings or on real property owned by or leased to public institutions of postsecondary education; to provide for exceptions; to revise criminal penalties for violations; to provide for definitions; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

12 PROHIBITED LOCATIONS Any buildings or property used for athletic sporting events (while athletic event is occurring) Student housing (includes fraternity and sorority houses) College and Career Academies Classes w/ Dual Enrollment students (defined as the space or room being currently used for instruction of Dual Enrollment students) Faculty, staff or administrative offices Rooms where disciplinary hearings are conducted

13 What does Open Carry vs. Concealed Carry look like?
Open Carry - Visible Concealed Carry – Not Visible Not allowed on SCTC campuses Allowed on SCTC Campuses

14 What is “on or about your person”?
If you choose to carry a concealed handgun on campus it must be “on or about your person”; meaning the handgun must be close enough to you that you can grasp it without materially changing position. For example, if you carry your handgun in a backpack, the backpack must always remain close to you, within immediate reach. Note: There are no storage lockers on campus. If you need to enter an exclusion area, you must secure your handgun in your vehicle.

15 SAFETY TIPS Trust your instincts and be yourself. If you feel unsafe, or even uncomfortable, in any situation, go with your gut. Don’t worry about what others think; your own safety comes first. Use your cell phone as a tool. Make sure it’s fully charged before you leave home. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, shoot a quick text for a “friend-assist.” Make a plan before you go out just in case your phone dies, so you can meet up with your friends at a specific location at a certain time.

16 SAFETY TIPS Be careful when leaving status or away messages online and when using the “check-in” feature on Facebook or Foursquare. Leaving information about your whereabouts reveals details that are accessible to everyone. Use common sense so that someone can’t track your every move. If you wouldn’t give the information to a stranger, then don’t put it on your online profile. Wait to let your guard down until people earn your trust. A college campus can foster a false sense of security. Don’t assume people you’ve just met will look out for your best interests; remember that they are essentially strangers.

17 SAFETY TIPS Don’t be afraid to hurt someone’s feelings. If you find yourself in an unsafe situation it’s OK to lie. Make up an excuse as to why you have to go. It’s better to make up a reason to leave than to stay in a possibly dangerous situation. Your safety comes before someone else’s feelings. If you see something, say something! Intervene if a situation seems questionable or if someone’s safety is at risk. By taking action you can prevent a crime from being committed. Remember you can also contact your campus police.

18 SAFETY TIPS Stick with your friends, and watch out for each other. Arrive together, check in with one another throughout the night, and leave together. Think twice about going off alone and if, for whatever reason, you have to separate from your friends, let them know where you are going and who you are with. Be aware of your surroundings. Whether you’re walking home from the library or at a party be mindful of potential risks. Get to know your campus and learn a well-lit route back to your dorm or place of residence. Think of a safe exit strategy. Are there people around who might be able to help you? Is there an emergency phone nearby?
