1 Bell Ringer 9/8/15 Write a reflection based on the picture below. Think about what does it represent for the United States and the power it holds. Also think about the expansion of the powers of the President.

Schedule Objectives Bell Ringer Schedule/Objectives Academic Language Jacksonian Notes (Chapter 3 Section 1) Students will be able to analyze the expansion of Presidential power post Louisiana Purchase Students will be able to trace the development of United States in the 1800’s

3 Academic Language Jeffersonian republicanism- Jefferson’s theory of government in which people should control the government. Louisiana Purchase- Jefferson’s 15 million dollar purchase from France which expanded the United States 2/3 across the continent. Monroe Doctrine- The foreign policy developed by President Monroe in 1823 which states that Europe would no longer stretch their powers into the Western Hemisphere

4 Jefferson becomes President
In 1800 Jefferson becomes President First time Congress must decide who is President There was a tie between Burr and Jefferson Hamilton intercedes Jefferson initiates a new form of government policy Jeffersonian republicanism Reduction in the size of the arm, halted naval growth, cut government spending on social events, and shrunk the power of the National Bank Marbury v Madison Established Judicial Review (Supreme Court can make decisions and judgment calls based on their interpretations of the Constitution)

5 Louisiana Purchase Napoleon persuaded Spain to give back the Louisiana Territory Napoleon wanted to use it to fuel his West Indies Empire Napoleon decided to sell it to the United States instead Jefferson didn’t know if he had the power to buy it, but did so anyway $15 million dollars total (Around $1 an acre)

6 Lewis and Clark Expedition
Headed by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark Set off from Saint Louis in 1804 Major goals of the expedition were: Find water route to the Pacific Map the West Record relevant flora and fauna found in the new Territory Connect with any Native Americans

7 War of 1812 Major factor was British impressment
Americans had a beef with French as well but hated British more America declared war in June of 1812 August of 1814 Britain sacked and razed D.C. America’s biggest win was the Battle of New Orleans -Enter Andrew Jackson Consequences: End of the Federalist Party (Opposed the war) Expanded American industry Confirmed the United States as an independent nation Why?

8 Monroe Doctrine As war in Europe began to settle, European powers began to look to the West America was not having any European conflict or threats in the Western Hemisphere President James Monroe declares that Europe should keep East of the Atlantic As an Exit activity, take the note cards and right how relevant the Monroe Doctrine/the following quote is to American foreign politics now. “Our policy in regard to Europe is not to interfere in the internal concerns of any of its powers But in regard to those continents [of the Western Hemisphere], circumstances are eminently and conspicuously different. It is impossible that the allied [European] powers should extend their political system to any portion of either continent without endangering our peace and happiness”- President Monroe
