1 Submitting Your Essay

2 Essay Day! Get a highlighter, pen, and a paperclip too!
In about 30 minutes, you will be asked to hand in the following items. Please take a few minutes to get them ready. Rubric  Name on the top Final Draft  Staple it. Analysis  Take out a blank sheet of lined paper. Get a highlighter, pen, and a paperclip too!

3 Preparing Your Essay Introduction Paragraph Conclusion Paragraph
Underline (with pen) where you mention the theme’s topic, where you introduce the setting, characters, and plot. Label each thing that you underline with one of the key words. If any of these are implied (and not directly stated) make note of it in the margin. Conclusion Paragraph Underline your theme. This should be an entire sentence. Label it.

4 Preparing Your Essay Body Paragraphs
Using a pen, underline and label each of the 12 steps of the hero’s journey. Label it with number and title (e.g. “#5 Mentor” or “#11 Resurrection Hero”). Highlight all of the narrative techniques used in your essay. Then, using your pen, label each one accordingly (i.e. hyperbole, running style, etc..). Please place labels in the margins on the side of the essay. Choose one of the narrative techniques to analyze. Draw a star next to that one.

5 Analysis (10 min.) You will have 10 minutes to complete your final task for your essay. Here’s what to do…. Place name, date, and title (“Essay Analysis”) at the top of the blank sheet of paper. Write a SPE analysis on your chosen narrative technique using the following tips: Statement – In my essay, I used __________(narrative technique) in order to ______________ (purpose). Proof – Cite your narrative technique. Explanation – Explain how your narrative technique makes your essay better. What affect does it have on the essay? On the reader? Remember, at least 2-3 sentences. Synthesis – YOU DON’T EVEN NEED ONE!
