Student Planner/Agenda
Brought home daily Please review Homework is written in the agendas daily. Because we do not check each planner daily, please write notes separately for me to see.

Yellow Monday Folders Include: - Student work
- Weekly Folder Report/Behavior Sheet (Comment Card) - Other items (ex: field trip forms) On Tuesday, the folder is returned with SIGNED Comment Card. {Progress reports will be sent home at the halfway mark.}

Homework Students are held accountable for their homework through the work/study habits section of the report card. Missing 0-3 assignments = can contribute to an Satisfactory rating on the report card Missing 4-6 assignments = Needs Improvement Missing 7 or more assignments = Unsatisfactory (This rating will take a student off of honor roll.)

Classroom Management Students pay for rewards with Brooks Birdie Bucks (Monthly) Students perform class jobs satisfactorily. (Paid Monday: 5 Brooks Birdie Bucks) Students can be fined in birdie bucks for not following classroom rules

5th Grade Testing This Year
IOWA Assessment: 9/11-9/15 End of Grade Assessment (Milestone): 4/11- 4/20

Language Arts Grades County assigned weights for 5th Grade Language Arts: 30% (Word Work/Grammar) 70% (Writing)

Reading Grades Assigned weights for 5th Grade Reading:
40% (Tests/Projects) 60% (Quizzes/Classwork)

All Other Grades Assigned weights for remaining 5th Grade Subjects:
60% (Tests/Projects) 40% (Quizzes/Classwork)

Vocabulary Words Each Monday students will receive their vocabulary words for the week. Vocabulary tests will be on Friday. (5th grade standard requires students to spell grade level appropriate words, consulting references as needed. We will be assessing spelling through writing assignments and content related tests.)

Parent VUE Please check Parent VUE for grades on a weekly basis.
Test Corrections: Math and Reading test partial credit corrections for any grades from 0-70% (Deadlines will be discussed with student.) *Corrections for grade changes are not given for classwork or quizzes.

Snacks Please send your child to school with a healthy snack each day. Snacks may be eaten when the student gets hungry. Lunch is at 12:01. You may also send your child to school with bottled water. We have a water fountain in the classroom. No red or blue drinks please. Snacks should be a single serving size.

Birthdays You may send or bring in a birthday treat if you wish. The treat will be served after lunch. Please make it simple and easy to serve. (Pre-cut or have individual servings for the entire class.) Ex: Cupcakes Birthday party invitations should be distributed outside of school.

Bus Pass Hand written notes for your child to ride home on the bus with another student are no longer permissible. There is a form that must be filled out. The student bus change form can be found either on the school website or in the front office.

Doctor’s Appointment/Absence
When your child is absent, please send in an absence excuse upon his/her return. If your child is going to be absent for several days, we will try our best to work with you and provide some work for them to complete. Make-up work is required to be completed upon return.

Tardies Please have your child to school by 7:50. It would be even better if they could arrive by 7:20. We complete our morning work during this time. It is very beneficial for your child to arrive early. This enables your child to get unpacked and settled for the day which is very important at this age. There are a few things that need to be taken care of in the morning, and it helps when students have time. Starting this year, there will be no extended tardies.

Conferences Please send us a note or an email to request a conference.
Conferences may be held in person or by phone. Conference appointment times and/or dates will be discussed upon request. Conference week will be in October

Field Trips We are currently considering:
Theater Performance (Symphony) on Dec. 8th High Touch-High Tech-Hands on Science Experiments Author Visits & Guest Speakers We will have one major field trip to Chattanooga on Friday, May 4th! (In Planning Stage.)

Ellis Island Simulation
5th Grade Program Oct. 30th 6:00pm (parents). This will be a musical! Ellis Island Simulation Nov. 3rd (at school during the school day) A chance for students to experience firsthand what immigrants to America went through and felt. Parent Volunteers are Needed and Appreciated.

Dress Code Administrators and teachers will enforce the dress code that includes but is not limited to: Shoes must be worn at all times, tennis shoes on PE days. Flip Flops are discouraged since they lack much support. Caps, hats, or bandanas may not be worn in the building except as authorized for special occasions. Clothing or ornamentation displaying illegal substances for minors, suggestive phrases, markings or profanity are prohibited.

Dress Code Continued Administrators and teachers will enforce the dress code that includes but is not limited to: Students may wear shorts as appropriate and at the discretion of the administration. Appropriate shorts are those that are near fingertip length. No bare midriff’s, bare backs or halter tops allowed. No spaghetti-strap tank tops. Tank tops must be three-finger in width.

Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. Bullying is: Intentional and purposeful, not an accident A pattern of behavior over time, not just a one time incident An imbalance of power or strength A feeling of injury or discomfort by the person being bullied
