1 Skeletal System List 3 major organs of this system. Variety of answers possible – femur, collar bone(clavicle), shoulder blades(scapula), rib cage, skull etc. What kinds of joint allows your arm to move in all directions? Ball and socket What material in your bones helps to make blood cells? Bone marrow What disease causes swelling of joints? arthritis What kind of joint is in your knee? hinge What is cartilage? Softer tissue found in joints and instead of bones in babies

2 Muscular System List 3 organs of this system. Answers vary – could list biceps, triceps, heart, abdominal muscles, quads etc. What is muscle strain? An injury to a muscle caused by overstretching it or tearing it What type of muscle is only found in the heart? cardiac What is the function of this system? Control movement of the body, organs and the beating of the heart What is tendonitis? A malfunction that causes a tendon (connecting bone to muscle) to become inflammed Where is smooth muscle found? The lining of the digestive tract

3 Cardiovascular System
List the 5 main organs of this system. Heart, lungs, arteries, veins and capillaries Which vessels carry blood to the heart? veins Which blood vessels carry blood away from the heart? arteries What is the name of the loop or pathway of blood from the heart to the lungs and back called? Pulmonary circulation Which of these are diseases or disorders of the cardiovascular system? Stroke, heart attack, arthritis, tendonitis, stomach ulcers, atherosclerosis, acne stroke, heart attack, atherosclerosis The process of collecting and returning excess fluid to your blood shows how which two systems are related? Cardiovascular and lymphatic

4 Respiratory System List 3 major organs of this system. Answers vary – lungs, bronchi, trachea, alveoli, nose, diaphragm What is the flap that covers the trachea while swallowing food? epoglotis What two tubes connect the lungs and the trachea? bronchi Describe what happens in the respiratory system when you inhale. (include what muscles are involved and how the diaphragm moves) diaphragm and rib muscles contract, air enters the space created inside your chest cavity What are the tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged? alveoli Describe how this system interacts with the cardiovascular system. This system brings in the oxygen that the blood cells need. The alveoli transfer the oxygen and takes out the carbon dioxide from the capillaries that are wrapped around them.

5 Nervous System List 3 major organs of this system. Answers vary – nerves, brain, spinal cord What is the main control center of this system? brain What is the difference between the periphery and the central nervous systems? Periphery includes all the nerves of the body. CNS – central nervous system only includes brain and spinal cord What do the nerves relay to the brain? Electrical impulses What did you learn from the lab you completed about this system? Your rate of reaction varies with different hands. It also varies among different people. We also learned that there are different numbers on nerve endings in different parts of your body.(more in fingertips than on your back) How does this system work with the integumentary system? The integumentary system is the skin and the nerve endings are in the skin so that we can sense things

6 Lymphatic/Immune System
List 3 of the major organs of this system. Answers vary – spleen, lymph nodes, heart, liver What is an allergy? An overreaction of the immune system What are the lymphatic tissues at the back of your throat called? tonsils What is the fluid of this system called? lymph Pathogens are fought by the T cells and B cells which are part of what system? Immune system Why does the doctor feel the areas on the sides of your neck when you see them because you feel sick? Swollen lymph nodes in that area are a sign that your body is fighting an infection

7 Digestive system List 3 major organs of this system. Answers vary – stomach, esophagus, small and large intestines, pancreas, gallbladder, liver Which body parts are involved in chemical digestion? Mouth, stomach, small intestines, gallbladder, Which body parts are involved in physical digestion? Mouth, stomach, small intestine Which body part is a long, narrow tube covered with nutrient-absorbing villi? Small intestine What “supporting organ” produces insulin? pancreas What “supporting organ” stores bile? gallbladder

8 Integumentary System List 3 of the major organs of this system. What is the function of the hair follicle? Skin, hair and nails. The hair follicle’s job is to grow the hair What are three functions of the skin? Regulate body temperature, produce Vitamin D, protect from foreign particles getting into the body. What is one cause of skin cancer? Too much sunlight – UV radiation Do your nails grow from the tips or the roots? roots How does this system work with the excretory system to eliminate waste? Sweat, oil and salts exit from the body through the skin so it is working with the excretory system.

9 Urinary/Excretory Systems
List 3 major organs of this system. Kidneys, ureters, urethra, bladder What causes kidney stones? Calcium and other salts build up as deposits in the kidneys or urinary tract What are the organs called that are made of the microscopic filters called nephrons? kidneys After the nephrons finish filtering the blood what is left to exit from the body? urine What part stores the urine? Bladder What three other systems also help to excrete wastes from the body? Integumentary, respiratory and digestive
