Objective: To examine the events surrounding the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party.

Do Now: Think about the last time you were
Away from your parents (overnight, friends house, traveling)
When you came back home after being away how did you act? DID you feel more “independent”? Did you feel like doing as you pleased like when you were away ?
**Write at least two sentences explaining how the English Colonists may have felt around the mid 1700’s ..(keep in mind the struggles they endured & how successful some of the colonies had become on their own !)

2. Great Britain raises taxes
Why do they raise taxes on colonists ?
Sugar Act-(1764) the first act that was designed to take money $$$$. Taxes or duties placed on sugar & molasses.
Colonists had grown un-happy because they had no representation in England & they had become self -sufficient

3. Quartering Act
• The colonists had to provide candles, bedding, and beverages to British soldiers.
• Because the New York assembly refused to obey the law, Britain dismissed the assembly.
* British soldiers had to protect the colonists from the Native Americans--- didn’t want another French & Indian War

4. Taxation w/ out Representation
Samuel Adams- May (1764) spoke at a public meeting the famous “taxation with no representation” motto……
Called for boycotting British goods & products

2) A crowd soon grew large and rowdy.
3) The British soldiers opened fire, killing five colonists, including Crispus Attucks, a black sailor active in the Sons of Liberty.

8. * On the same day as the Boston Massacre, the Townshend Acts were repealed, except for the tax on tea!

• Since the British continued their tax on tea, the colonists continued to boycott British tea.
• As a result of the colonial boycott on tea, the British East India Company lost a lot of money.
• Therefore, Britain passed the Tea Act in 1773.

15. Tea Act (1773)
• The British East India Company was allowed to sell tea directly to the colonists, bypassing the tea merchants.
* Although they still paid the tea tax, the price of tea decreased.
• If the price of tea decreased, why were the colonists angry? They were angry because…
…tea merchants had been cut out of the tea trade.
…they thought it was a trick to make the colonists accept the tea tax.
In order to protest against the Tea Act, the Sons of Liberty organized the Boston Tea Party.
