1 Warm up 3/6/17 1) Arrange the following organisms to show who eats whom: killer whale cod fish krill shrimp algae leopard seal 2) What might happen to the other organisms if algae were removed from this group? 3) What might happen if the killer whales were removed? 4) Are there any organisms in this group that eat more than one kind of food? Explain. 1

2 Activation Video After watching the video clip, record your answer in your warm- up section What does Mufasa mean when he says that we are all connected in a circle of life? ““Lion King“Lion King”“Lion King” video clip

3 Energy Flow in Ecosystems
3

4 All organisms play a role in their ecosystem:
Producer (Autotroph) Make their own food (usually through photosynthesis) Ex: plants (even the Venus Flytrap!) 4

5 All organisms play a role in their ecosystem:
Consumers (Heterotroph) Can’t make its own food, Gets energy from eating other organisms Herbivores – eats plants Carnivores – eats animals Scavengers – eats dead animals Omnivores – eats plants & animals 5

6 All organisms play a role in their ecosystem:
Decomposers: Break down waste and dead organisms to return matter to the environment Ex: bacteria, fungi, worms 6

7 A world with no decomposers?
7

8 Venus flytrap – producer and consumer
Producer or Consumer? Venus flytrap – producer and consumer Fly - consumer 8

9 Producer or Consumer? Consumer (herbivore) 9

10 Producer or Consumer? Producer 10

11 Producer or Consumer? Neither, Decomposer

12 Producer or Consumer? Consumer (omnivore)

13 Producer or Consumer? Consumer (carnivore) 13

14 Energy enters an ecosystem as…
SUNLIGHT!!! Source of energy!

15 Order of the food chain:
Food chain – shows one path of the flow of energy in an ecosystem Order of the food chain: Sun – energy source Producer Primary Consumer – eats producers Secondary Consumer – eats 1st level consumers Decomposer – recycles matter for use by producers

18 Food webs Most organisms do not eat the same thing every day, so they are part of more than one food chain. Food web - consists of many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem

19 With the person next to you talk about the possibilities within this food web…

20

21 Flow of energy When an organism eats, it obtains energy, then uses a lot of energy in life process like reproduction, growth and movement. This means that only part of their energy is available to the next organism in the food web. 21

22 Energy is transferred

23 Ecological Pyramid Models
An Energy Pyramid is a graphical model of energy flow in a community. The different levels represent different groups of organisms that might compose a food chain. Energy pyramid purpose: Shows that about 10% of a trophic level’s energy is transferred to the next level. There cannot be too many levels, because the animals at the end of the chain would not get enough food/energy to live. Therefore, many herbivores (large biomass) are needed to support a few carnivores (small biomass).
