Idea that states had the right to decide whether or not to follow a U.S. law Each southern state believed they should decide whether slavery was legal or not State’s rights

The South SECEDES! Election of 1860

23 E Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected.
In the South, Lincoln was not even on their ballot. Southerners seceded because a Republican was elected. Lincoln was not considered an abolitionist, but was against the spread of slavery.
