1 Chapter 1 The Nature Of Chemistry

2 1-1 What is Chemistry? Objectives
1. Explain why a knowledge of chemistry is central to many human endeavors Chemistry: the study of all matter and the changes they undergo

3 1-1 The Central Science Chemistry is call the central science it overlaps so many sciences Chemistry plays an important role in your life

4 Matter and Characteristics
Matter: has mass and takes up space Mass: the amount of matter Weight: mass under influence of gravity

5 1-2 The Scientific Method
Objectives: List and explain the steps in the scientific method Tremendous potential of science lies in how information is gathered. Scientific Method is defined as an orderly and systematic approach to solving problems

6 Observations Qualitative data: physical characteristics
What you observe with senses Quantitative data: numerical information What you measure

7 1-2 Steps in Scientific Method
1. Define the Problem! 2. Propose Hypothesis 3. Collect data, experiment 4. Propose a theory 5. Publish your results

8 1-2 Scientific Method Independent Variable: what is being tested
Dependent Variable: results from changes in the independent variable Experimental Control: conditions that are predictable during an experiment

9 1-2 Laws and Theories Theory: A statement about the behavior of nature based on data and experimentation Theories can change or be modified based on new data Law: A statement about the behavior of nature with no explanation, it is believed to be true Laws rarely change
