African Americans have had an impact upon slavery by working as abolitionists and helping to free others from bondage.
They worked to eliminate segregation.
Some began schools and colleges to educate other African Americans.
Some were pioneers in their field such as sports, science, or medicine.
Today many African Americans are high ranking officials in our nation’s government.
Their accomplishments and contributions are varied and numerous.

3. Harriet Tubman She was called Moses of her people.
She helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad.
She was considered a fugitive because of her efforts to help others.

4. Mary McCloud Bethume
Mary McCloud Bethume founded Bethume-Cookman College for women in Florida in 1904.
She was vice-president of the NAACP.
She served as a consultant, delegate, and advisor in interracial affairs.

5. Rosa Parks Rosa Parks was a seamstress in Montgomery.
In 1955 she defied segregation by refusing to give up her seat on a bus.
This began the Montgomery Bus Boycott which was led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

6. Jesse Owens Jesse Owens was born in Alabama.
He was an Olympic track star.
He won several gold medals during the Olympics.

7. Colin Powell
Colin Powell became the first African American Secretary of State in 2001.
He was the National Security Advisor for President Reagan.
Powell was also Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for George Bush.
