3 Sovereignty and Limited Government
US became a sovereign nation when independent from GB Allowing the US to decide upon its own internal gov and international policies Power rests with the citizens and they provide the power to govern Limited Power Gov’t only has the power and duties granted by the people Constitution- supreme law of the land Outlines gov’s power and functions Bill of Rights Rule of Law Abide by the constitutions, not allowing officials to do anything they wish No one is above the law

4 Federalism The constitution limits power by dividing power and responsibilities AKA- Federalism How the Federal System works Colonies became states in order to keep their boundaries and identities The federal system protects the rights for states to carry out laws and regulations to benefit it citizens States can/do make final decisions regarding some gov’t activities Citizens live under and must obey the laws of both the U.S. and State government National law takes priority of state laws Laws must be constitutional

6 Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances
Gov’t is limited and controlled by diving it among diff. branches Each has a different function Founders wanted to limit the ability of ONE branch to control or weak the other 2 Separation of Power Powers limited to their own areas of interst Must cooperate with other branches Both national an state are structured the same Three Branches Legislative- makes laws Executive- enforces laws Judicial- interprets laws

Ways to keep the other 2 branches from becoming too powerful Congress can pass a law, but president can veto Congress can override the President’s veto w/ 2/3 vote Supreme Court can declare a law made by Congress unenforceable if it violates the constitution U.S. Senate can confirm or reject candidates for judgeships
