1 Home Safety – Just as important as On The Job Safety?
Read below to find out. I have a home safety tip to share. This weekend I found myself in my attic investigating a water leak from an ice dam (see definition of ice dam in notes section). I wore long sleeves, safety glasses and gloves for protection against the fiberglass insulation and for some reason; I decided to put on a hard hat. At one point, while perched on the rafters, I lost my footing and instinctively jerked upright to maintain my balance. I felt my head smack the roof, then I crouched back down… minus my hard hat. I turned to see it impaled on a spike. My hard hat not only protected me from a nice knot in the noggin, but almost certain ventilation of my gray matter!  I left it there as a safety reminder. See next slide! Fred Flynn Account Manager Madison, WI Ice Dam - In winter we sometimes have a warm spell followed by snowfall that can causes ice to build up in the gutters.  Enough build up and it starts to creep under the shingles at the edge of the roof.  Good attic ventilation will allow this to melt, no problem.  When a roof vent gets blocked, the moisture builds up in the attic space and condenses into water on the rafters, which drips into the house.   Doesn’t happen too often and the simple fix is to remove the restriction to the ventilation, which is what I doing.  The up side is the ice kills the termites and other bugs so it’s a decent trade-off.
