They block the snow from sliding off your roof. How they form Ice dams happen when snow melts then refreezes then starts to build up a wall of ice. How they are dangerous Ice dams can be dangerous for your health. When snow melts it turns to water when the water hits the ice dam it has nowhere to go so it goes backwards under your shingles, Because shingles are only meant for water to go down. then the water that got under the shingles creates mold and mold is bad to inhale.
