1 John 2:15-17 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Softness Towards: Word & Preaching 1 John 2:15-17 Softness on Moral Questions: Preaching Isa. 30:10 Jer. 5:31; 6:14 Isaiah 30:10 Who say to the seers, "Do not see," And to the prophets, "Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Jeremiah 5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule by their own power; And My people love to have it so. But what will you do in the end? Jeremiah 6:14 They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, Saying, 'Peace, peace!' When there is no peace.

Seriousness of Worldliness
Separates from God (Isa. 59:1-2; Rom. 8:5-8) Lose your reputation (Prov. 22:1; Prov. 6:27, 33) Lose your influence (Rom. 2:24; 1 Tim. 4:12) Separates from GOD: Romans 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (8) So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Loss of Reputation: Proverbs 22:1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold. (Speaking of an adulterer) Proverbs 6:33 Wounds and dishonor he will get, And his reproach will not be wiped away. Loss of influence: Romans 2:24 For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU," as it is written. 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Seriousness of Worldliness
Hinders your worship (1 Pet. 3:7; John 9:31) Desensitizes us to sin (Psa. 1:1-3) Hardens heart (Heb. 6; 10; 1 John 5:18) Hinders worship: 1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered. John 9:31 Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. Desensitizes to sin: Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; Hardens heart: Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, (5) and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, (6) if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. 1 John 5:18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Seriousness of Worldliness
Breeds other sins (2 Sam. 11) Disfellowship (1 Cor. 5:1-13; 2 Thess. 3:6-15) Breeds other sins: 2 Samuel 11 – David’s sins with Bathsheba Disfellowship: 1 Cor The man who had his father’s wife 2 Thessalonians 3:6 But we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you withdraw from every brother who walks disorderly and not according to the tradition which he received from us.

Seriousness of Worldliness
Hinders our race/growth (Heb. 12:1-ff) Suffer in this life (Exo. 20:5; 34:7) Eternal damnation (Rom. 6:23; Rev. 21:8) Hinders our race: Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Causes suffering in this life: Exodus 34:7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children's children to the third and the fourth generation." Eternal damnation: Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

The Christian Life Contrasted to Worldliness
Holy (1 Pet. 1:15-16; 4:1-3) Pure (1 John 3:3) Law by which lives (1 John 3:4) Fears God (1 Tim. 2:9) Holy: 1 Peter 1:15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, Pure: 1 John 3:3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Law by which we live: 1 John 3:4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. Fears God: 1 Timothy 2:9-10 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, (10) but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

The Christian Life Contrasted to Worldliness
Not continue to sin (Rom. 6; 1 John 3) Respect for word (Psa. 119:11) Separate from world (2 Cor. 6:14-17) Does not continue in sin: Respects word: Is separate from world:

Titus For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
