War Begins

How did the attack at Fort Sumter create conflict between the North and South?

The states that remained in the United States became known as the Union. The Confederacy had taken control of most of the forts and military property in the south.

One fort that was still in Union control was Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Confederacy wanted all Union soldiers out of the south
The Confederacy wanted all Union soldiers out of the south. The Confederacy demanded that the Union surrender Fort Sumter. When the Union did not surrender Fort Sumter the Confederacy opened fire on the fort.

*The attack on Fort Sumter marks the beginning of the Civil War.

After the attack Lincoln asked Union states to supply 75,000 troops
After the attack Lincoln asked Union states to supply 75,000 troops. This angered the states of Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. They seceded and joined the Confederacy.

The Union now consisted of 23 states and the Confederacy consisted of 11 states. Four Union states (which were also slave states) were unsure whether to stay in the Union or join the Confederacy. They became known as Border States.

They were: Delaware Maryland Missouri Kentucky

For Lincoln the main reason for fighting was to keep the United States together. Other Northerners fought to end slavery. Southerners were fighting to preserve states’ rights and slavery. They believed they were defending their homeland and their way of life.
