1 Instructional Technology Center (ITC)
Program Review Presentation May 5, 2010 Introduce ourselves.

2 Grand Opening August 2000 August 2000
Lani: This is the front of the brochure for the ITC’s grand opening in August The vision for the center was to provide a facility dedicated to education technology workshops, support and individual assistance.

3 Explore Develop Apply Technologies
We provide training and support to ARC’s workforce. Explore Develop Apply Technologies Marsha: The center has tried to stay true to this vision and to provide the kind of support and training necessary for instructors to incorporate best practices in new and digital media into their courses. Three fulltime staff make up the ITC. Distance Education Coordinator Educational Media /Web Design Specialist Instructional Development Coordinator

4 Educational Technology
Lani: Our focus is educational technology.

5 Student Success Lani: With student success as our goal—using technology as a tool to enhance teaching and learning.

6 Strengths Training Marsha: One of our primary strengths is training.

7 1054 Workshops 8516 Attendees Marsha: We conduct many workshops—the numbers you see projected are over a 6 year period. We provide about 175 workshops each year. Feedback from our users is generally very positive as you can see by fans.

8 Learning Management System Use
Today 38,451 Students Learning Management System Use Marsha: The success of our training can be seen in the rapid growth in 3 areas. The first area is the use of the LMS. We began using Blackboard in 2001 and spent the year retraining faculty and moving courses into D2L. ARC is the power-user among the 4 colleges—40% its use. Growth continues particularly among faculty who want to web-enhance their courses. Fall ,219 students

9 382 course sections 84 course sections
Distance Education Courses 382 course sections 84 course sections Marsha: The second area of growth is in DE courses. Over 350% increase in the last six years Today Fall 2003

10 Online Teaching Institute:
600+ Trained Marsha: The phenomenal growth in Distance Education courses has been nurtured by the Online Teaching Institute- an 8 week long course that we teach 5 times each year. The content of the Institute covers all aspects of online and “web-enhanced” education - including teaching and learning issues and technologies. Most instructors who teach online have completed that OTI.

11 Ingeniux CMS 90+ Users & Growing Administration Support Services
Divisions Departments Faculty Lani: Since 2007, when the first web pages created in Ingeniux were published, more and more users are being trained and taking over the development and updating of their own websites. As of 3 weeks ago, Ingeniux can be accessed from home, giving staff, more specifically instructors better access create their own faculty websites.

12 Strengths Support Lani: Another strength of the ITC is the support we provide.

13 Comprehensive Website
Lani: This is a public unveiling of the new ITC homepage. Users can access 100s of pages of step-by-step instructions and resources.

14 Drop-in Lab: Monday-Friday
Lani: Users can get their questions answered on the spot in our daily drop-in labs. They like it. It works.

15 ITC Email Dear ITC, Can you help me?
Lani: User can also get questions via .

16 Lani: Or by appointment

17 Assistance via Telephone
Lani: Or by telephone

18 Challenge Marsha: The ITC does have some challenges. Challenges

19 Ensuring ADA Compliance
Marsha: Technology advancements have made it easier for us to integrate multimedia into our courses and webpages. Now the challenge is to make sure that such media is accessible to all our users. The screenshot from this video has captioning. That makes it accessible and compliant.

20 Innovations with limited funding
Marsha: We need to stay abreast of new technologies if we are to be on the cutting-edge of educational technology. We also need to provide resources and just-in-time training to staff. We need to figure out how we can do this effectively and cheaply.

21 Planning Implications
Marsha: What are our plans? Planning Implications

22 ADA Compliance Grant funding Train users
Marsha: We are working with two grants from The California Community College Chancellor’s Office. One will help us to get videos in DE courses captioned (we are working with DSPS on this one) and the other provides us with a library of over 3000 of closed-captioned educational videos.

23 Free Tools Budget Constraints
Promote and train users to assure ada compliance Grants in progress supporting ADA compliance Lani: Despite budget constraints we are excited about the plethora of free web tools available. We already have integrated some of those tools into our training. The challenge is indentify the tools that best enhance teaching and learning and then to provide training and support.

24 Evaluate Marsha: Does our training and support meet the needs of our users? We will continue to evaluate our services through surveys and workshop feedback. We are sending out a survey this week which asks staff what workshops they would like to see offered this fall.

25 Lani: Our workshops are successful as you have seen by the growth in the use of educational technology at ARC. We will continue to provide quality, just-in-time training.

26 D2L for all learning modalities
Marsha: We will continue to support the growth of D2L and nurture it. Students are asking their instructors to use it. They want to access their grades or other content online. All courses can use D2L to enhance teaching and learning…

27 Future ARC Students Many of our students are digital natives. They are highly connect and technology savvy. They expect information to be readily accessible. Many have already experienced online learning and will spend their lives in digital environments after college. Online learning will continue to grow—it’s inevitable. The ITC will continue to help support instructors integrate technologies in their courses.
