5 What is AP Seminar? AP Seminar is a skills-based, thematically organized, interdisciplinary course which Provides sustained practice of investigating issues from multiple perspectives Cultivates student writing abilities so they can craft, communicate, and defend evidence-based arguments Empowers students to collect and analyze information with accuracy and precision It is NOT subject-specific or discipline-specific.

6 2018-2019: AP Seminar at Folsom High School
Open to 11th and 12th graders beginning this year. Counts for GPS Elective Credit and “G” elective credit for CSU/UC system. Encouraged for students with a wide variety of interests, in a wide variety of pathways, with a wide variety of academic needs.

8 How are AP Seminar students assessed
How are AP Seminar students assessed? Assessments take place over the course of the second semester. PERFORMANCE TASK 1 (20% of overall score) Team Research Project Individual report of 1200 words Team project and presentation (8-10 minutes + oral defense) PERFORMANCE TASK 2 (35% of overall score) Individual Research Project Individual research-based essay of 2000 words Individual presentation (6-8 minutes + oral defense) END OF COURSE EXAM (45% of overall score) Argument analysis and evaluation Argument essay synthesizing source material

9 2018 AP Seminar Scores According to College Board, students taking the AP Seminar assessments in 2018 experienced an 82.2% PASS RATE, with 5 students earning perfect scores! 5 = 7.9% 2 = 15.4% 4 = 16.7% = 2.4% 3 = 57.6%

10 Grading System Grading Scale: 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D, below 60% F
Weighted Grades: Writing/Projects/Formative and Summative Assessments = 80% Classwork/Homework = 20% Please note that FIRST semester will include many more teacher-graded assignments than second semester. Unit assessments in the first semester will be “mock” versions of AP assessments in the second semester. Grades in SECOND semester will largely be based on completion and adherence to deadlines and performance task expectations.

12 What is AP Research? In AP Research, students Develop the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research to produce and defend a scholarly academic thesis. Explore deeply an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest and through this inquiry, Design, plan, and conduct a year-long mentored, research-based investigation. The course culminates in an academic thesis paper of approximately 5,000 words and a presentation, performance, or exhibition with an oral defense.
