Adapt according to what your staff already know in regards to wellbeing] As part of our focus on wellbeing in our school community, we will be introducing the online Flourishing at School survey, reports and resources with our staff and/or students so that we can measure and monitor our levels of wellbeing, and to allow us make informed choices on providing strategies to improve wellbeing. Today, I will be taking you through the FAS resources and will cover…. (the dot points)

3 Purpose The goal of Flourishing at School is to inform school-based mental health interventions at the primary prevention level Tertiary Prevention (Illness Management) Goal: Care for individuals who have a mental illness Secondary Prevention (Risk Management) Goal: Identify and control risk factors to avoid escalation Primary Prevention (Wellbeing Promotion) Goal: Keep people well and assist to flourish The Public Health Model Applied to Mental Health The FAS is based on research from an area of research called positive psychology. Positive psychology is concerned with wellbeing and has the goal of helping individuals and communities to flourish. This is in comparison to traditional psychology which is focused on mental illnesses and it’s treatment. The FAS survey and resources are aimed at wellbeing promotion for the whole community; based on this Public Health model of intervention, it has a role within primary prevention in Mental Health. This is in comparison to tools and programs that are focused on Secondary prevention, which are targeted at individuals or groups at risk of developing an illness, or Tertiary prevention, which is targeted at people who are distressed or who have developed a mental illness. By including informed school based mental health interventions at the primary prevention level, there may be a reduction in the numbers of students and staff requiring assistance at the secondary and tertiary prevention levels.

4 Purpose Based on PERMA-H model of wellbeing
Use at a collective level (e.g. whole school/cohort) or individual student/staff level Monitor wellbeing over time Assess the effectiveness of school wellbeing interventions PERMA-H - The PERMA-H model of wellbeing (“which I will explain in a moment”) comes from the work of psychologist Martin Seligman and guides positive education at flagship schools like Geelong Grammar School. Use – The FAS survey can be used individually with staff and students to get individual wellbeing reports, and also used to gather summary data on whole school wellbeing, including getting results in cohorts such as a year group and gender [Note. Explain HERE which of the surveys you will be using – staff and/or students]. Monitor – The FAS survey can be used more than once to gain a picture of any changes in wellbeing over time. Assess – Being able to re-test can allow us the assess how effective interventions have been.

5 Purpose The Mental Health Continuum
The Mental Health Continuum represents an approximation of where our population is at in regards to mental health and wellbeing. You can see that many people may not meet criteria for a diagnosis of mental illness, but that many people are not flourishing either; rather, many are either languishing or moderately mentally healthy. "Flourishing is the highest state of wellbeing and human development. It refers to living within an optimal range of human functioning, one that connotes goodness, generativity, growth and resilience." Cambridge Centre for Health & Wellbeing. The term “flourishing” essentially means a high level of wellbeing. It is described as “….” Central to the Flourishing at School model is that our individual wellbeing can be developed from the languishing or moderately healthy area towards flourishing, based on recent developments in positive psychology.

7 What does the survey measure?
Positive Health Nutrition Exercise Sleep Emotions Positive Emotions Negative Emotions Accomplishment Goal Setting Self-Efficacy/Resilience Accomplished Engagement Strengths Known Balance Absorption (Flow) The Flourishing at School Profile is based on the PERMA-H model of wellbeing. This is consistent with the Geelong Grammar model of positive education. A strength of this model is that it provides insight into six different components of wellbeing. The Flourishing Profile offers additional insight into wellbeing by breaking down the six components into sub-components with a focus on known antecedents to wellbeing outcomes. [Read through each component] For example Engagement or “flow” is marked by absorption in an activity. The flow state is more likely to be entered into if the individual is tapping into their strengths (so it is important that individuals are firstly aware of their highest strengths – strengths known), and there is a good balance between the difficulty of the task and the individual’s skill level. Meaningfulness Purpose Community Positive Relationships Mutual trust and Enjoyment

8 Interpreting the Flourishing Profile
Scaled score of ‘4’ Scaled score of ‘8’ After completing the FAS online survey, staff and/or students are provided with an individual Flourishing Profile. The Flourishing Profile has been designed to give a quick snapshot of current wellbeing levels at either an individual or collective level. When interpreting the profile, simply put – the more colour present in each scale the higher the level of wellbeing (compared to the norm group ie. students/staff across different schools in Australia). The centre ring represents scores in the 10th percentile or lower; the bottom 10% of the norm group. The very outer ring represents scores in the 90-99th percentile; the top 10% of the norm group. In this profile, the person is doing best in the areas of Positive Emotions, Balance, Absorption, Community and Self-Efficacy. The greatest needs for wellbeing development include Nutrition, Sleep, Negative Emotions and Strengths Known.

9 Process Students/Staff complete online survey after signing up using a link ed to them individually 30 mins administration time and PC/tablet required Students/Staff able to access individual results online immediately Students to go through feedback and set wellbeing goal during another class Students/Staff able to access resources for self- development as often as they like through own portal Note. Include items depending on whether staff and/or students will be completing the survey.

10 Reports After completing the survey, staff will receive a comprehensive report in the FAS portal, showing the Flourishing Profile wheel and detailing how you are doing in each area of wellbeing compared to a normed group. This information is confidential to you. The school will also receive a Summary Report of the whole school results, with all responses anonymous. Students receive a Student facing report (Wellbeing Snapshot Report) – featuring simplified feedback. These are suitable for use with children as young as 11 years old and will be accompanied by instructions and exercises that can be used by staff to help the feedback process. (See Please note the individual student (school facing) reports are for school/pastoral care use only. They are not suitable for providing feedback directly to students in group settings.

11 Resources When you receive your individual report, you may note that there are areas of your wellbeing that are not as strong as others, and you may want to learn ways to improve in these areas. The Flourishing at School web portal provides both staff and students with access to high quality wellbeing resources. The resources are broken down into the eight categories of the SFP, making it simple to navigate to areas that may interest you. Each resource features wellbeing improvement exercises, downloadable content, and links to multimedia resources.
