1 Lesson six: Hong Kong data challenge

2 Hong Kong data challenge
You will: Learn more about the challenges facing Hong Kong. Answer data challenge questions related to the challenges facing Hong Kong. This will help you to learn: How decision makers use research and data to assess the challenges and come up with solutions to solve them..

3 Facing the challenges The Hong Kong government and non-governmental organisations such as Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) are taking action to try and mitigate the problems and challenges facing Hong Kong. They assess the risk from the challenges and come up with solutions by researching the challenges and collecting data.

4 Why did the Hong Kong government ban fishing trawlers like these?
WWF Trawlers such as these were banned by the Hong Kong government. These trawlers caught fish by dragging a big net along the bottom of the sea. These fishing boats can no longer fish in Hong Kong waters. Why did the government stop them? Trawlers damaged the sea bed and with fine nets would capture all the fish. Sometimes the rare Chinese white dolphin would be caught up in the net. There were too many of the trawlers catching the fish too. This was not sustainable. Small fishermen also found it difficult to catch fish. The ban is to allow fish to breed and recover. This will make the fish in Hong Kong waters more sustainable.

5 Extreme rainfall Watch a video showing Hong Kong’s extreme rainfall, go to YouTube How can people can protect themselves, local buildings and homes from storms? What could the government and decision makers do?

6 Why might these men be working on the slopes?
When it rains in Hong Kong it is often very intense rain, especially from April to September. Hong Kong is hilly and the intense rain can wash away slopes and cause landslides, risking injury to people and damaging buildings. Ross Burrough ©

7 Main activity -Temperature Complete the data challenges questions.
Use your maths knowledge to answer the questions related to the challenges facing Hong Kong: -Temperature -Rainfall -Pollution and litter -Over-fishing -Waste management

8 Extension Can you create a data challenge question for another pupil to answer? Swap and answer a question from another pupil.

9 Plenary Mark your own work
Which challenge facing Hong Kong concerns you the most? Does the United Kingdom face any similar challenges to Hong Kong?

10 Further study Visit the WWF website
WWF and the Chinese White Dolphin Visit the WWF website WWF website to learn more about endangered species of the seas and oceans surround Hong Kong.
