1 Delivering Constructive Feedback in Simulated Learning
Ginger Sherrick, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, RN-BC, CHSE June 2, 2017 Delivering Constructive Feedback in Simulated Learning

2 Is there another way?

3 Feedback vs. Debriefing

4 What is Debriefing really?
“Debriefing is a critical conversation to reframe the context of a situation to clarify perspectives and assumptions, both subjectively and objectively.” -Benner, Sutphen, Leonard, & Day, 2010 What is Debriefing really?

5 Faculty Preparation= Improved Acceptance
Objectives are: SMART Congruent with the course objectives Presented prior to simulation

6 Pre-Brief In Simulation
Pre-Work Orientation Fiction Contract Confidentiality Use of Video

7 Debriefing 101 What is important?
Facilitator must be trained Environment conducive to debriefing Facilitator needs to have observed the simulation scenario Debriefing structure or formal framework Aligns with the objectives

8 Debriefing Tools NLN-2015 Vision Statement called for theory based debriefing INACSL Standards revised for Debriefing. IPE Tools- NLN called for debriefing across the curriculum in June 2015.

9 How do I say it? ‘I’d like to talk about “the door”’ (Preview Statement) “Can you talk about that?” “I wonder what happened” “I saw” (advocacy) “What’s your take on that?” “I wonder how you see it” “I think” (advocacy) “It seemed to me” “I was scared” (emotion) “I wonder what others were thinking at the time” “I wonder” (inquiry) “I am frustrated” (emotion) “I will answer - but let me turn to the rest of the group” “I am concerned because” (emotion) “Let’s Tune that up a bit” Address using first names – “John, I understand that….” “I am pleased because” (emotion) Avoid the use of “but”– this is easier said than done)  When stating a positive observation add “because” (re-enforce what was done well!)

10 What do you see?

11 Evaluation Tools DASH Lasater
Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS): Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS): The TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire (T- TAQ):

12 Lessons Learned Be Factual Be Consistent Foster Inquiry Be a Student
