4 General Education Program
Basic Rules of “Gen Ed” General education requires 40 credits for all students/all majors There are 4 key “objectives” (A-D) A-Build knowledge of diverse peoples and cultures and of the natural and physical world B-Develop intellectual and interdisciplinary competencies for academic and lifelong learning C- Exercise individual and social responsibilities D- Integrate and apply abilities and capacities developed under each of the 3 above areas, adapting them to new settings, questions, and responsibilities G- At least one course must have the “G” overlay/designation to meet the Grand Challenge requirement

5 General Education, Continued
Within the 4 key objectives, there are 12 outcomes (A1-D1) and each of them must be met by at least 3 credits A single course may meet more than one outcome, but cannot be double counted towards the 40 credit total At least one course must have a Grand Challenge (“G”) designation No more than 12 credits may be from the same course code (with the exception of honors HPR courses, which may have more than 12 credits) General education courses may also be used to meet requirements of the major or minor

6 Pre-Registration & Academic Advising
All freshmen must meet with an academic advisor before being cleared for registration This is true for both fall and spring semesters Book early for best appointment availability unless you are being advised (and having your advisor hold lifted) within your URI101 class

Come with a curriculum sheet filled out with your current classes and any courses you transferred in prior to coming to URI (AP, EEP, TD, IB etc.). Think about what outcomes you’ve not yet filled, and also what major requirements are slated for the spring semester Bring questions and be prepared for your appt.
