Lesson 1: How did the Renaissance change the way Europeans viewed themselves? Lesson 2: In what ways did the Protestant Reformation encourage Europeans to leave Europe?

3 Causes of the Reformation
Renaissance ideas. The printing press spread ideas faster. Rulers hated being controlled or sharing power with the pope. Merchants didn’t like paying church taxes.

4 Problems With the Catholic Church
Corrupt leaders spent the church’s money on themselves. Poorly educated monks and priests. Church officials broke their vows . Gambling Celibacy (had children without being married) Drunkenness

5 Martin Luther A monk who was against the church selling indulgences.
Indulgence- Something you purchased that would lessen your sin.

6 Luther’s 95 Theses 95 statements Luther wrote against the Catholic church. Luther hammered them to the Wittenburg church door. Luther’s core beliefs People are saved by faith. Church teachings should be based on the Bible. All people with faith are equal.

9 Luther Gets In Trouble & Fighting Erupts in Germany
Luther is excommunicated by Pope Leo X In 1529, German Catholic princes Fought German Protestant princes. The Peace of Augsburg- Peace agreement stating that each prince could decide his state’s religion.

13 England Becomes Protestant
King Henry VIII (Tudor Dynasty) of England was a Catholic. He wanted an annulment from his wife Catherine of Aragon. Henry wanted a male heir. He had to ask the Pope. The pope said no.

15 Henry’s Solution Henry broke from the Catholic Church and divorced Catherine. Henry secretly married Anne Boleyn which was made legal by English Parliament. Act of Supremacy- made Henry head of the church in England.

18 Henry’s Children Rule Edward- was king from age 9 to 15.
Mary(Bloody Mary)- Ruled England from 1553 to She Killed many Protestants in England and tried to restore Catholicism. Elizabeth- Ruled over 44 years. Returned England to Protestantism and started the Anglican Church.
