3 Bullying defined by Senate House Bill 1444
An intentional written, verbal or physical act, including but not limited to one shown to be motivated by any characteristic such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability, or other distinguishing characteristics, when the intentional act: (a) Physically harms a student or damages his/her property; or (b) Substantially interferes with the student’s education; or (c) Is so severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or (d) Or substantially disrupts the orderly operation of a school Types of bullying include: Physical, Emotional, Resource, Relational, and Cyber

4 Stats about bullying 1/3 of all teens reported being bullied while at school 20% made fun of by a bully 18% had rumors spread about them 11% physically bullied 6% threatened 5% were excluded from activities 44% of middle schools reported bullying problems compared to 20% of elementary or high schools

6 3 steps to STAND UP STOP!! (describe the unwanted action) hitting me (use the bully’s name) Johnny! STOP! HITTING ME, JOHNNY!! WALK away and remove yourself from the situation TALK to someone about it. It needs to be documented Do not hold it in It is not normal or ok If people do not know they cannot help

7 Power Behaviors Change your attitude Change the balance of power
Be confident and brave Look up not down Use a loud voice and use the bullies name Use “I statements” I don’t like it when you… Change the balance of power Don’t play or walk alone Ask bystanders for help Talk to a teacher or other adult for help Change your response Try being nice back REPORT THE INCIDENT Avoid (specific # of days) Hang out with someone else Play or hangout somewhere else
