Mind Stretcher How are evaporation and condensation different?
How are photosynthesis and respiration related? In evaporation, water goes from a liquid to a gas. In condensation, water goes from a gas to a liquid. Photosynthesis and Respiration are opposite processes. Photosynthesis takes in carbon dioxide and releases Oxygen. Respiration takes in Oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.

3
The Carbon Cycle Plants make carbon compounds from carbon dioxide they take from the air. This happens in photosynthesis.
4
Carbon is Number 6
5
The black spheres are carbon atoms.

9
Animals obtain carbon compounds by eating plants or other animals, or both.
10
Animals and plants return carbon back to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide when they respire.
11
Think of Decay
12
Decay Most trees shed their leaves each year
Most animals produce droppings at least once a day All animals and plants will eventually die
13
How does this process happen
How does this process happen? 2 min to discuss with the people around you.
14
When animals and plants die, microbes digest them and obtain carbon compounds from their bodies.
15
The Breakdown The breakdown happens because the materials get digested by maggots and worms etc
16
Microbes respire, this releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
17
The movement of carbon between organisms and the atmosphere is called the carbon cycle.
19
Burning of wood and fossil fuels releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Man’s activities have caused an imbalance in the natural carbon cycle. There is now more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than before.
20
The Carbon Cycle CO2 in air
Burning fossil fuels and wood releases carbon 1. CO2 is taken in by plants for photosynthesis and turned into carbohydrates 6. These microbes also release CO2 through respiration CO2 in air 2. Plants release CO2 through respiration 4. Animals release CO2 through respiration 3. The carbon taken in by plants is then eaten by animals 5. Animals (and plants) die and their remains are fed on by microbes
