1 Welcome to Uryside School Primary One Induction

2 Ethos Uryside School is a school where everyone works together as a community to create an ethos where all the children are nurtured, respected, included, inspired and motivated in reaching their full potential, not only academically, but as confident individuals ready to actively grasp and follow their dreams in the future. Uryside School is a caring and inclusive school. Children, staff, parents and the community are valued as individuals, achievements are recognised and celebrated. When the children of Uryside leave school they know how to learn, they thrive on challenge, they are ambitious, they have high self-esteem and know how to make the right choices as responsible citizens. 5 Our Curriculum There are key areas of learning in our curriculum which we feel are our duty to ensure the health and wellbeing of our children and that our learners are equipped with the skills for life, confident individuals, responsible citizens, effective contributors, successful learners. Our curriculum is not prescribed. It is constantly evolving with the input from the learners, staff, parents, partners and opportunities for learning e.g. Commonwealth Games, Centenary of First World War, staff professional development, latest educational good practice. Our curriculum is flexible as we are constantly looking to inspire, challenge, motivate and working in partnership with our learners we encourage children to contribute to the planning of their learning ensuring that learning is current, relevant and captures the imagination and interests of our learners. 6 Our Curriculum Aim Curriculum for Excellence is intended to help children and young people gain the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for life in the 21st century, including skills for learning, life and work. Purpose Its purpose is often summed up as helping children and young people to become: Successful learners Confident individuals Responsible citizens Effective contributors. These are referred to as the four capacities.

7 Life Vest Learning - Assembly
Our school ethos is the beating heart of our school. It is central to making our school a happy, learning focused environment where everyone feels valued, included and a real sense of belonging. Assembly time offers the opportunity to learn together through the key themes which are highlighted in our school ethos. Key learning themes are based around the four capacities of Curriculum of Excellence and eight key areas of ‘Getting it Right for every Child’. Ensuring the children are fully equipped with a life vest of skills and learning ready to actively grasp and follow their dreams in the future.

10 The School Day Start: 9.00am Break: 10.30-10.50am Lunch: 12.30-1.15pm
Afternoon Break: pm School Finishes: 3.20pm

11 Primary 1 Phasing in Arrangements
Week One First School Day Children will start Primary 1 on Tuesday 21st August at 9.15am-12.00pm Wednesday 22nd to Friday 25th August 9.00am-12.00pm

12 Phasing in Arrangements
Week Two Monday 27th – Friday 31st August 9.00am-1.30pm (Children will stay in school and have lunch) Full time attendance will start on Monday 3rd September (9.00am-3.20pm)

13 School Lunches Lunch is from 12.30-1.15pm.
School lunches are free for P1-3 or children are welcome to bring a packed lunch. Cartons of juice can be bought for 20p You will be provided termly with a lunch menu. Please discuss menu choices with your child.

14 Parent School Lunch Parents are invited to accompany their child for a school lunch on one of the following dates: Tuesday 26th June, Wednesday 27th June, Thursday 28th June. Please complete the form and return by Tuesday 12th June.

15 Parent School Lunch Within your information pack you will find information as regards creating a login for iPayimpact. This is a system in which all Aberdeenshire schools use to provide parents with the facility to pay online for school lunches. We appreciate that school lunches are free for P1 to P3 children however we would encourage you to create a login to familiarise yourself with this service.

16 Buddies Your child will be paired with a P2 buddy who will support them in school as necessary.

17 Outdoor Clothes Please ensure your child has suitable footwear and clothes for being outside in all weather. A waterproof jacket which can be kept in their school bag is ideal for the better weather. Please help your child to become independent in putting on and taking off the clothes they will be wearing to school.

18 School Uniform (Including Green Bookbags)
Our school office has various sizes in which to try before purchasing.

19 Gym Kits We will ask for children to come to school ready for gym on their gym day. Shorts and t-shirt or joggers/leggings. Primary 1 stay in their gym kit all day so please ensure they will be warm enough for playing outside. Long hair should be tied up and no jewellery should be worn. We encourage children to wear a Tshirt colour which relates to your child’s house.

20 You will be informed at your next visit as to which house your child will be associated with.

21 Indoor Shoes Children should have a pair of indoor shoes to change into at school for gym and also for during the winter when they may be wearing boots. These can be trainers or plimsolls.

22 Please label everything!
Labelling Please label everything! Sweatshirts, trousers, skirts, t-shirts, vests, pants, gym kits, purple folders, jackets, school bags, water bottles…

23 Art Aprons Please provide your child with an art apron – an old shirt is fine.

24 Snacks and Water Pupils should bring a snack for break time or can buy something from tuck shop. (20p) Pupils should bring a bottle of water with them to school. Please ensure that the bottle is recognisable to your child.

25 Home Learning Children will have a diary where any reading will be recorded. There will be further information about home learning when the children are settled and we are ready to begin.

26 Communication Please come and see us if you have any worries or concerns. If you have a letter to hand in please put it in your child’s hand to give to us on the way in, as we are not able to check purple folders every day.

27 Stay and Play Tuesday 12th June 3.30-4.30pm
Parents are encouraged to stay and visit the green area with their children. Children will have the opportunity to meet their class teacher and classes will be confirmed. The class structure for 2018/2019 will most likely be two P1 classes and one P1/2 class.
