2 INTRODUCTION This slide show has been designed to educate you about different systems & methods of lubricating a mechanical process. All of these will provide oil or grease application manually and automatically & include both methods.

4 GREASE APPLICATION THERE ARE A FEW METHODS OF APPLYING GREASE MANUALLY INTO AN APPLICATION: SPREADING BY HAND GREASE PACKING GREASE GUN

5 SPREADING GREASE BY HAND
THIS USUALLY DONE ON OPEN MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND SHOULD USUALLY BE DONE USING A SPATULA. IF THIS IS TO BE DONE VIA USING OUR HANDS GLOVES SHOULD BE WORN, AS GREASE CAN BE CLASSED AN IRRITANT & STANDS THE RISK OF REMOVING ANY NATURAL OILS FROM OUR SKIN AND CAN DRY THE OUT THE SKIN & CAUSE CRACKING OR RASHES TO OUR HANDS.

6 GREASE PACKING THIS METHOD IS USUALLY APPLIED TO A MECHANICAL COMPONENT SUCH AS A BEARING (IMAGE TO THE RIGHT), AND THE GREASE IS ACTUALLY PACKED DIRECTLY INTO THE PLACE WHERE IT IS NEEDED. ONCE THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF GREASE HAS BEEN LOADED, THE APPLICATION IS EFFECTIVELY CLOSED UP WITH THE GREASE SEALED UP WITHIN. THIS METHOD IS ALSO USED FOR CAR COMPACT VELOCITY JOINTS.

9 SEALED SIDE BEARING THIS BEARING HAS BEEN PACKED WITH GREASE AND BOTH SIDES OF THE BEARING HAVE BEEN SEALED PEMANENTLY WITH PLASTIC SEALING RINGS. THE GREASE IS PERMANTLY TRAPPED WITHIN, NOT LETTING GREASE TO ESCAPE OR ALLOWING ANY EXTERIOR CONTAMINATION IN

Do not contaminate the grease when loading the grease gun Ensure the rod is fully retracted and locked in place before loading with grease Always ensure the grease gun body is cleaned so as to prevent the gun from being slippery

24 Total Loss Lubrication
Total loss lubrication involves creating a thin oil-film between moving parts which is renewed at regular intervals by an automated lubrication system This type of lubrication is used for internal combustion engines and steam engines. This method of lubrication will be covered during the following automatic lubrication systems These will need to be identified.

Maintenance of this system is: To keep the oil supply regularly replenished Ensure the control valve is freely moving Ensure that the supply orifice is free from blockages

Maintenance of this system is: To keep the oil supply regularly replenished To ensure the wick is in good condition & in the correct position Ensure that the supply orifice is free from blockages

32 SPLASH FED / OIL BATH This is by far the simplest method of lubrication by oil. This works by the rotating components within the mechanical system operating at speed and effective dipping themselves into a bath of oil whilst they are turning. This method is preferred due to its effectiveness in lubricating for example bearings. Typically, the oil level should almost reach the centre of the lowest rolling element when the bearing is stationary. As the entire system works in rotation, the oil will be effectively picked up and spread / sprayed onto the neighbouring parts with the sealed system chamber.

The following animation shows how a splash type lubrication system is used in a car engine. This method will ensure that a vast majority of the relevant parts inside a car engine are supplied with lubricating oil.

Maintenance of this system is: To ensure the oil is kept replenished at the correct levels Make sure that the oil is kept in good condition and free from contamination Ensure the flinger device is in good condition and is able to perform its task

37 FORCE FED OIL LUBRICATION
This system is also known as circulating oil & simply involves passing the lubricating oil around the system of mechanical components that require lubricating, and frequently is used during higher speeds, it is here where temperature increases. To ensure effective lubrication and extended life of the oil and parts that are being lubricated, pump would be used to drive the lubricant through the system through a filter and possibly a heat exchanger along the way.

Maintenance of this system is: Ensure the oil filter is in good condition and functional Ensure the oil is in good condition (contamination free) Make sure the oil is in good supply That the pump is functioning corectly

40 COMBINED SYSTEMS It may be necessary at time to employ more than one lubrication system, this would usually ensure even lubrication takes place to reach all of the mechanical working parts within a machine or process. The next slide shows a system that uses both force fed oil and oil bath systems.

44 Oil Filter BYPASS VALVE FILTER ELEMENT
In an oil filter, the oil flows into the filter on the outside of the filter element, passing through the filter element and out to the engine. The bypass valve, shown on the cutaway filter above, is to allow the oil to bypass the filter element should the element become plugged. (Thick oil,high revving)

THESE TYPES OF GREASE LUBRICATORS NOT ONLY WORK ON THE USING THE SCREW OPERATED AND SPRING METHODS, ANOTHER TYPE IS USED. THIS OTHER TYPE USES A CHEMICAL REACTION TO DRIVE THE GREASE OUT OF THE DISPENSING UNIT IN PROGRAMMABLE INTERVALS INTO THE EXACT DESTINATION DESIRED.
