1 S.T.R.E.S.S. STOP THE REALLY EXCESSIVE STRESS SYCLE
By Namita Sehdev Eun-jung Park Roger Frogoso STRESS MANAGEMENT /COPING METHOD

2 Overview Background Purpose Existing Apps Criticisms
How Our App Differs Project Structure Sensors for Measuring Stress Application Function Application Features

3 Importance of Dealing with Stress
BACKGROUND Importance of Dealing with Stress Can affect your body: Back Pain, Headaches, Lower Immune System Can affect your emotions: Anger, Anxiety, Fatigue, Depression Can affect your Behavior: Social Withdrawal, Affect Interpersonal Relationships, Poor Eating Habits, Substance Abuse

4 Purpose Detect stress Measure the strength of stress
Identify the things that trigger stress Recommend techniques or programs to cope with the stress Record the progress - so that the stress can be avoided in the future

5

6 Existing Stress Detectors
Applications Bulletproof Stress Detective by The Bulletproof Executive (iOS) S Health by Samsung (Android) Stress Check by Azumio (Both) Devices Tinké by Zensorium - Smartphone Compatible Monitor (Fitness and Stress) Measures Heart Rate Through Thumb Inner Balance Sensor by HeartMath (Earlobe Clip Sensor, Heart Rate) Bullet - Bluetooth Low Energy Heart Rate Monitors S Health - record and analyze your daily activities and habits, now has Stress Detector Stress Check - measuring your heart rate through the camera and light features to estimate stress level

7 Stress Check Interface

8 Criticisms on the existing apps
Most of them measure heart rate variability the change in the interval between heartbeats Some of them lack the capacity for data processing to measure heart rate variability accurately No way to know whether a dip in variability is caused by stress or positive excitement Stress caused by memories of past stressful events can be color the current mood

9 What’s different on our app?
Heart rate variability is still the most robust, noninvasive measures of stress response when someone is in a distressing or scary situation, the autonomic nervous system activates the fight-or-flight response, which reduces the variability in the interval between heartbeats. A stressed-out heart, for instance, may only vary by two beats per breath cycle Track the context of the person's situation to differentiate distressing events from exciting events Time, place, season, weather, on vacation, on work, ... Analyzes emotion from facial expressions Context of situation - Time, place, season, weather, on vacation, on work, ...

10 Measuring Stress Application Function Application Features
Project Structure Measuring Stress Application Function Application Features

11 Accurately Measuring Stress
Properly Quantify Stress Rigorous Definitions for Stress and Measuring Stress Incorporate Appropriate Sensors Design Will Depend on What Needs to Be Measured Separate Device From Phone (ex. Wrist Band) Send Information to App Efficient Method for Transferring and Storing Data (ex. Cloud) Blood Pressure Emotions

12 Application Basic Function
Calculate Level of Stress Algorithm With Sensory Data as Inputs Personal Profile to Increase Accuracy Set Base Information Such as Age, Weight, Height, ect. Factors in Algorithm with Sensory Data

13 Application Feature Provide Recommendations for Coping and Stress Management Interactive - Video Exercise, Checklist, ect. Recommendations Will be Based on Stress Level Progress Tracking Update Causes of Stressors Stress Progress will Affect Recommendations (ex. If Stress Increases, recommend a new approach) Will Require Machine Learning to Implement
