2 Telephone Game 1. Form a circle around your desks. (3 groups) 2. The secret is going to go clockwise around the circle 3. ONLY WHISPER- you don’t want to ruin the game for everyone else As the “secret” goes around, think about how information can change as it goes from person to person.

3 Different Types of Sources
There are two different types of sources: Primary- evidence from a time period or event Secondary- someone else’s interpretation of a time period or event

4 What is a Primary Source?
An informational source from the time of the event Autobiographies Newspaper Articles Diaries Speeches Documents Artifacts Eyewitness accounts Photographs Film Footage Laws Art Letters Music

5 Why do we use Primary Sources?
It’s original evidence from the time period, not information that has been passed through the telephone game of telling and retelling history A.K.A. The “true story”

6 Does a Primary Source have to be the original material?
No- it can be in another form, but it CAN’T be edited or interpreted in any way. For Example, a picture of King Tut’s coffin printed in a book or posted on a website can be considered a primary source as long as it was not changed or edited.

7 Questions to ask yourself when looking at Primary Sources
Who wrote (or made) this? How do they know the information they are telling me? When did they write/make it? Why did they write/make it? Who did they write/make it for?

8 What are Secondary Sources?
An informational source that analyzes the event. These sources often use several primary sources to compile their information This is someone else’s interpretation of an event, NOT an account from someone that was there. Examples: Biographies History Books Encyclopedias Textbooks

9 Are Secondary Sources Useful?
Yes- they provide the necessary background or context to be able to interpret Primary Sources. For example, World Book 2005 or your Social Studies textbook can provide background information about the events leading up to the Trojan War.

What things do we need to know before we can determine whether it’s a Primary or Secondary Source? A copy of the United States Constitution, printed in an 8th grade text book. Questions to ask: When is the item in the picture created? Is it the original?

1. Choose one of the scenarios that your group identified as either “Primary” or “Secondary.” 2. Write a Brief Constructed Response that explains why you identified that scenario the way that you did. Provide evidence from the scenario to support your reasoning. **This is an individual activity, so everyone needs to complete their own response**
