Total US population is about 350 million 12% are African-American 14% are Hispanic 4% are Asian Americans 1% are Native Americans About 66% are “white” (European descent)

African-Americans are clustered in the Southeast Hispanics are clustered in the Southwest Asian Americans are clustered in the West Density is greatest in cities Tie in to Ravenstein

7 Urban Concentrations African-Americans make up 85% of the population in Detroit – but only 7% of Michigan Chicago: 33% of population versus 8% of state of Illinois Hispanics in NYC: 25% of population versus 5% in NY state

8 What does Hispanic Mean?
Created as an inoffensive label for people from all Spanish-speaking countries (also Latino/a) Most Hispanics identify with a particular national origin Chicano/a can refer to Mexican-Americans Puerto Ricans and Cubans are the other large groups

9 Prejudice and Discrimination
Prejudice – negative attitudes toward a group based on biased or insufficient information stereotype – a set of ideas, based on distortion, exaggeration and over simplification Discrimination – acting upon prejudiced opinions by treating people unfairly Includes: avoiding social contact w/certain groups, segregation, violence, killing Institutionalized Discrimination – unfair practices growing out of common behaviors and attitudes that are part of society’s structure (schools)

10 Racism and Hate Crimes Racism - extreme form of prejudice based on the belief that one race or ethnic group is superior (KKK) can result in discrimination many believe they are morally justified Hate Crimes – criminal acts motivated by extreme prejudice Includes: bias versus race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or ancestry Increasing in frequency
