3. Pirate Attacks Shipping played a key role in Carolina’s economy.
Pirates and Privateers operated off the Carolina coast during the late 1600s and 1700s.
Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet became most infamous pirates of the area.

4. Native American Attacks
Yemassee War- 1715, the Yemassee attacked settlements around Port Royal. The war started because the Indians been cheated and abused by traders and settlers.
Importance- Long war and costly in terms of money and lives. Also settlers realized they were responsible for own protection and had to treat Native Americans better to avoid future wars.

5. War with Spain
Spain and England were political rivials competing for land in North America.
Charles Town, S.C. and St. Augustine, FL. were leading cities that were attacked by both nations.

6. Slave Rebellion
Plantation system required large amounts of slaves to work the land.
SC had a large slave population
Rebellion was always a possible threat to plantation owners and merchants around the Low Country.
