2 One American’s Story Dawn on April 19, 1775
70 militiamen – grassy common – Lexington, Mass Captain John Parker led militia Minutemen-”ready to act at minute’s warning” ** British were coming!

3 4 Intolerable Acts After Boston Tea party there was fury in Britain bc they felt colonists should pay for the over 1million $$ worth of tea 1774 Parliament passed series of punishment laws = Coercive Acts Colonists call them “INTOLERABLE ACTS 1. close the Boston port until colonists pay 2. Ban committees of correspondence meetings 3. Enforced the Quartering Act 4. British officials in colonies who committed crimes didn’t have to go to trial in colonies…they’d go to Britain = unpunished for crimes

4 First Continental Congress
September delegates to Philadelphia Voted to ban all trade with Britain until Intolerable acts were repealed *this meeting planted seeds of a future independent government This boycott=backfired on colonists because Britain increased restrictions and sent more troops Patrick Henry expects war = “give me liberty or give me death” spoken in the Virginia House of Burgesses

5 Midnight Ride of Paul Revere
Sam Adams had a spy network April 18, 1776 British commander sent orders to arrest Sam Adams and John Hancock in Lexington Paul Revere rode “the British are coming” and 1 lantern = by land and 2 lanterns= by sea!

6 Lexington & Concord 1st two battles of Revolutionary war
April British troops reach Lexington Captain John Parker leads 70 minutemen Nobody knows who fired first shot, but somebody did British kill 8 minutemen and head to Concord 4,000 Minutemen show up on the road from Lexington to Concord and fire upon the British chasing them back to Boston LOYALIST = colonist loyal to Britain PATRIOT= colonist who sided with the colonial rebels
