5 Pune’s Trash Solution: A Zero Garbage City
Adapting Katraj ward case study into an innovative model for a citywide system

6 PUNE CITY 8th largest city in India and the 2nd largest in the state of Maharashtra Population is about 4 million Households nearly 1 million Area of city is 250 sq. kms Divided into 4 Zones ; 15 Administrative Ward Offices ; 76 Prabhags

7 BACKGROUND Rapid urbanization Changing consumer habits
Space constraints for dumping Change in quality and composition of waste generated Innovative and sustainable solutions Segregation at source , door step collection and decentralized processing of waste

8 OUR BELIEF Effective waste management is critical for the conservation of limited natural resources Reduction, Reuse and Recycling of waste Waste is a resource Segregation at Source is the key Awareness Drive necessary for improving segregation Streamlining collection mechanism Corporate involvement is useful for manpower and financing awareness drive

9 ZERO GARBAGE WARD MODEL
Increase awareness Reduce mixed waste Remove containers Zero Garbage Improve efficiency of waste collection Decentralised processing of waste 11/7/2018

10 CONCEPT OF ZERO GARBAGE WARD
Ensure almost 100% segregation of waste Ensure almost 100% collection of waste Maximize recycling of dry waste Processing of waste locally within the ward Strengthening of the secondary collection system and removal of containers / community bins Minimal amount of waste sent outside the prabhag

11 ZERO GARBAGE WARD MODEL
Realizing the gravity of the situation , Janwani undertook a pilot project in 2011 at Katraj Zero Garbage Ward Model evolved Pilot model was implemented by Janwani with PMC, SWaCH and Cummins India Ltd. Since Feb 2013, the Model is being implemented in 20 Prabhags covering almost 2.25 lac properties Encouraged by the success, it is being implemented in entire city in a phased manner.

13 APPROACH Our approach to the problem of Solid Waste Management has been comprehensive All stakeholders involved will be addressed to improve the efficiency of SWM Once the stakeholders are a part of the system, sustainability can be easily achieved Weekly monitoring of collection and segregation level is published on Janwani Website( Peoples participation through awareness drive Corporate involvement for finance and manpower

14 STAKEHOLDERS IN THE MODEL
PMC Solid Waste Management System SWaCH Cooperative Door-to-door collection of garbage Households and Commercial units Segregate the garbage into dry and wet garbage Corporate / Sponsor Financial aid Janwani Facilitator

15 CORPORATE PARTICIPATION
CSR is now becoming an increasingly important priority for businesses. It is evident that companies are willing to get more involved in the community, leading to a sustainable and healthy environment. Corporate involvement by employee volunteering and financial assistance is increasing. Cummins India, KPIT, Persistent Foundation, Bajaj Auto, Serum Institute and others has joined this initiative Benefits - Section 135 and schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013 as well as Section 55 and 186.

16 BENEFITS OF ZERO GARBAGE MODEL
Increase in coverage of door step waste collection Increased segregation of waste Substantial reduction in community bins Reduction in transportation cost for PMC Diversion of waste sent to landfill Decentralized processing of waste Model certified by ISO. Therefore can be replicated.

17 ROLE OF JANWANI Survey Understand the existing solid waste management system Data Collection Planning Device a strategy based on the survey Plan for creating awareness Execution Improve efficiency of collection and segregation and local level processing i.e. society level Conduct awareness programs Raise Corporate funding and manpower

18 STEPS INVOLVED IN EXECUTION
Baseline data collection Survey Interview Random sampling Focused Group Discussion Identify gaps Ghanta Gadi routes Community bins DTDC coverage Infrastructure requirement Define a strategy Implementation of strategy Organise Awareness programs to improve segregation Improve the collection mechanism Improve local processing of waste Monitor Monitor the change Ensure sustainability

19 MAKING PUNE CONTAINER FREE CITY
Properties using the container to find out the causes behind dumping the waste into the container. Preliminary survey Non availability of waste pickers and PMC vehicles Declaring feeder points with timings and adherence to the same Provision of infrastructure, convincing the local Corporator Classification of the causes At least a week before notice for actual removal of the container Publishing Notice Actual removal of the container and follow up for not converting the location to become chronic spot

20 IMPROVING WASTE COLLECTION
Wastepickers Attach households Increase collection Reduce community bins Ghanta Gadi Optimise collection efficiency Improve coverage Collect segregated garbage Surprise checks to ensure segregation Follow Ghanta Gadi Follow Waste picker

21 WASTE AS A RESOURCE Compost pits
Societies constructed after 2000 have pits Reactivate the non existing compost pits Biogas plant Society level Decentralised PMC plant Recyclables Sold by waste pickers to scrap dealers Non recyclables Converted to energy at plants like ROCHEM
