2 What is self-determination?
The process by which a country determines its own statehood and forms its own allegiances and government.

3 What was apartheid? The forced segregation by the the government in South Africa, was in place from 1948 to 1994.

4 What is Balkanization? When a nation divides into smaller states due to conflicts between ethnicities about boundaries and borders.

5 What is the difference between race and ethnicity?
Ethnicity is what one identifies themselves as (cultural practices and lifestyle). Race a man- made term based on ones ancestry and biology.

6 What is white flight? White Americans fled from cities and urban areas in fear of their neighborhoods being “invaded” by minorities.

7 What is nationality? Nationality is the state of being part of a nation whether by birth or naturalization or ties to a specific nation.

8 Why is ethnic conflict in Africa so widespread?
When European colonist cam to Africa they deemed some ethnicities better than others. This struggle for power and equality between ethnicities still exists today.

9 Who are the Kurds? The Kurds are an ethnic group in the Middle East, mostly inhabiting a region known as Kurdistan, which spans adjacent parts of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. They speak the Kurdish language.

10 What does the distribution of ethnicities in the US look like?
The white-American population is dispersed throughout the US. Black-Americans primarily live in the southern US. Hispanic-Americans live in big cities and near the Mexican border in the South. Asian-Americans live near the West Coast.

11 What happened in Plessey v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education?
“Plessy vs. Ferguson” was in 1896 when the supreme court made “separate but equal” facilities for blacks and whites acceptable. This was repudiated in 1954 with the supreme court decision” Brown vs. Board of Education.

12 Where was the former Yugoslavia located? What happened to it in 1992?
Firmer Yugoslavia is in the Balkan Peninsula. In , it broke up due to rivalries among ethnicities that resurfaced in the 1980s after their long term leader Tito died. Breaking away to form independent countries were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia. This caused an ethnic cleansing, where Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Serbs and Croats cleansed out the Bosnian Muslims.
