2 What is Ahara ? o Literally mean nutriment or food.(in the context of yoga). o Food intake through senses. o All senses consume food. Five senses- o Eyes: see the world and take some visualible food either good or bad. o Ears: hear the world and take some food through word either good or bad. o Mouth: taste the meal or eatable things either good or bad. o Etc.. o Ahaara is consume by the senses.

3 Definition of Ahara. o Food is the prime need of every individual & human being are the reflection of a short of food which has been ingested by him. o Today the food & habits are changing according to changing life style of present inhabitants. o Ahara is the prime need of sustaining of life. o Ahara has its own importence, without Ahara life would not continue for long life.

4 Types of Ahara Mitahara or Hitahara Ahitahara or Viruddhahara Mitara or Hitahara o Which is responsible for the normal growth and develop of body. Ahitahara or Viruddhahara o Interfers with normal body function and their by causes many diseases or ill health.

5 Concept of Mitahara The concept of is discussed in the indian philosophy and different anciant texts. Some texts use a different word and concept for the idea of moderate diet and paying attention to what can eat and drinks. Charak Samhita Sushruta Samhita Hatha Yoga Dattatreya Samhita Bhagvadgeeta ShivaYoga Dipika etc.

6 Cont… Literally mean of Mitahara – the habit of moderate food. Mitahara is a samskrit combination word from- Mita - Modarate, good, sweet. and Ahara - Food Which to get the moderate food. In the Upanishadas and Sutras that discouse why virtuous self restraint is appropriate in matter of food. In Samhita, the discouse what and when certain food are sutable.

7 Cont… In Charak Samhita : o Wholesome diet promotes health and growth, its most important cause of disease. o Sprit of Mitahara- its insist even light,easily digest and nutritious food should be consumed in excess of bodily requirement. In Sushruta Samhita : o Carefully prepared, o Recomonded balance in food consumed in moderation.

8 Cont… In Shivayoga Dipika: o Used the term Nityahara- planed diet and regulated diet. In Dattatreya Samhita: o Used Laghuahara- eating lightly, small portion of diverse food. In Bhagvadgeeta: o The food which increase life, purity,strengh,health,joy and cheerfulness.

9 According to Hatha Yoga Brahmacäré mitähäré tyäägé yoogaparäyaëaù| Abdädürdhvaà bhavetsiddho nätra käryä vicäraëä||57|| One who is brahmachari, takes moderate and pure food. BRAHMACHARI means one who consciousness is absorbed in Brahma, the purest state of consciousness,not necessarily one who abstains from sexual interection. One who takes agreeable and sweet (mitahara) food and practice his sadhana regularly and maintain detachment.

10 Cont… Susnigdhamadhurähäraçcaturthäàçavivarjitaù| Bhujyate çivasamprityaé mitähäraù sa ucyate||58|| Sweet food means fresh, plesent, satvik food. Not it mean that which have extra sugar, its should be good for metabolism. The stomach should not be overloded, it should be half filled with food,one quarter with water and one quarter with air. To place shiva- when taking food the yogi should feel that he is eating for himself. Shiva is the inner consciousness,the aatma. Everything the yogi eats should be considered as a prasad and offering to the supreme being.

11 Cont… Eating should be considered as part of sadhana and life itself is a sadhana. A yogi should alwayes regard food as a medicine which will purify and fuel the body and mind for the maintenance of life and progress in sadhana. Heavy food leads to a tamasic state and induces sleep only.
