2 22 September 2018 Pie Charts

3 How can we compare this data?
90 students were asked what their favourite sport was. 20 students preferred tennis. 10 students liked golf. Football was the favourite sport for 30 students. 15 students chose cricket. 15 students picked basketball. How can we compare this data?

4 We’ll use a pie!

5 A table helps us organise the data.
Favourite Sport Golf Football Basketball Tennis Cricket Students (Frequency) 10 30 15 20 The whole ‘pie’ represents the 90 students. Each ‘slice’ represents a category. Cricket Golf Football Tennis Basketball

6 A pie chart shows the proportion of frequencies.
We can easily compare the sectors (‘slices’) to compare the data. Cricket Golf Football Tennis Basketball

7 360 90 =4° How many degrees in the total pie? 360°
If we surveyed 90 people, how many degrees is one person ‘worth’ in the pie? =4° 10 people like golf. (40°)

8 360 divides exactly by 60, so each person can be represented by 6°.
The scaling method 60 students were surveyed about their favourite drink. 12 10 90 How many degrees in the total pie? 360°
If we surveyed 90 people, and 10 people liked golf, what fraction of the pie is that? So, we want of 360°. x 360° = 40°

13 The proportional method
60 students were surveyed about their favourite drink. Favourite Drink Cola Water Lemonade Orange Juice Blackcurrent Students (Frequency) 10 20 15 5 We can calculate the fraction of each category, and take that fraction of 360°.
