4 Sustainable Energy Systems

5 Short and medium-term research actions (405 M€)
Clean energy, in particular renewables Cost effective supply Large scale integration Energy savings and energy efficiency Eco-buildings Polygeneration Alternative motor fuels In accordance with the principle of focussing research effort, the following sections to first describe the main objectives to be achieved and the strategically important areas in which research should be concentrated. They then go on to provide details of the technical content of the first call (Call 2003.SM) and an indicative content for the second call (Call 2004.SM). Research areas described below but not included in the first and second calls for proposals may be included in subsequent calls.

6 Medium and long-term research actions (405 M€)
Fuel cells, including their applications New technologies for energy carriers (Hydrogen & Electricity) New and advanced concepts in renewable energy technologies Capture and sequestration of CO2 Socio-economic tools and concepts for energy strategy In accordance with the principle of focussing research effort, the following sections to first describe the main objectives to be achieved and the strategically important areas in which research should be concentrated. They then go on to provide details of the technical content of the first call (Call 2003.ML) and an indicative content for the second call (Call 2004.ML). Research areas described below but not included in the first and second calls for proposals may be included in subsequent calls. Where appropriate, quantified targets are set out in the Work Programme. They are ambitious long-term targets (15-20 years) and not easy to achieve. Nevertheless, they are a clear indication of the scale of achievements to which an individual proposal should aspire.

Security, reliability and quality of supply as well as optimal integration of DER in EU wide energy networks Strategically important areas are: Development of key enabling technologies for distributed energy networks with high power quality and security of service, including low-loss cables, HTS for electrical applications and ICT. Design, development and validation of novel components and DER solutions needed for future interactive energy service networks Energy storage technologies and systems for grid-connected applications

TOPIC 3: Advanced energy storage systems for RES. RTD AREA 1: Transmission systems RTD AREA 2: Energy storage for grid-connected applications RTD AREA 3: High temperature superconductors devices a) Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence New demand driven solutions for large scale implementation of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in Europe. Novel concepts and advanced components for power transmission and distribution networks with high Distributed Energy Resources (DER) penetration. Advanced energy storage systems for RES. b) Specific Targeted Research Projects Electricity - transmission systems (advanced systems for stability and control, as well as the development of low-loss cables). Electricity - innovative energy storage technologies for grid-connected applications (new concepts for energy storage technologies, where applicable exploiting the synergies with transport applications). Electricity - development of devices based on high temperature superconductors (HTS) (development and validation of HTS based components for electrical applications, such as fault current limiters, motors, transformers, etc).

Contribute actively to the implementation of activities directly linked to program strategic objectives, such as: Dissemination, transfer, exploitation, assessment of broad (overall or partial) programme results Contribute to strategic objectives linked to the ERA or preparation of future activities Special actions to integrate NAS

16 Important A new programme, with a new approach under a new context for EU RTD during the next 4 years. However, it will be revised at mid-term. Consider always the overall policy context (ERA, Sustainable Development, Security of Energy Supply) and address related impacts. Focus on the topics/issues/instrument for which the call is inviting proposals. High ambitions of new instruments.
