1 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Tennis
Technical Overview

2 Technique Technique is how a player uses their body and the racket to achieve a ball outcome Good Technique will be: Efficient – the body and racket being used in the most proficient way Effective – the desired outcome being achieved with consistency ‘Good technique’ achieves the desired outcome, gives potential to improve outcomes in the future, is repeatable, does not fatigue or cause injury

3 Tennis Technique Efficiency Effectiveness Reception
Set up Path, Angle, Speed of racket through contact Ball Characteristics HDDSS Effect on opponent Action Suggestion(?) Reception – Set up – Action becomes Set Up (including reception skills 3R’s) and Action (hitting?) Efficiency Effectiveness

4 Technical development
Technical development is a combination of developing both efficiency and effectiveness Sometimes development is based on increasing effectiveness and the player develops efficiency to achieve the outcome Sometimes development is based on increasing efficiency to give the player potential to be more effective in the future A good coach understands the relationship between the 2 and is constantly switching between them

5 Technical development
Evaluation Observation Coach Knowledge of Technique Development Analysis Improvement

6 Tennis Technique: Effectiveness
Reception HDDSS Set up Path, Angle, Speed of racket through contact Ball Characteristics HDDSS Effect on opponent Action Suggestion(?) Reception – Set up – Action becomes Set Up (including reception skills 3R’s) and Action (hitting?) Efficiency Effectiveness

7 Effectiveness Effectiveness can be described in terms of the following outcomes: Result of the point Effect the shot has on opponent Effect the shot has on the player The characteristics of the ball sent

8 Ball Characteristics Height Direction Depth Speed Spin

9 Tennis Technique: Efficiency
Reception HDDSS Set up Path, Angle, Speed of racket through contact Ball Characteristics HDDSS Effect on opponent Action Suggestion(?) Reception – Set up – Action becomes Set Up (including reception skills 3R’s) and Action (hitting?) Efficiency Effectiveness

10 Efficiency What needs to change, develop or be added through contact point to achieve this? Describe this using: Path Angle Speed Can the player find the solution to this now they understand?

11 Efficiency If the player hasn’t achieved their goal yet
How can they develop their: Reception skills Set up Action In order to help them achieve the desired improvement at contact and in ball effectiveness

12 Technical Analysis: Recap
When working with a player the coach needs to establish: What is the current outcome – efficiency / effectiveness? What is the intended or future outcome - efficiency / effectiveness? The coach must get the player to feel/understand the gap between the above 2 statements. Sometimes developing an understanding is enough to help the player make the improvement – let them try…. 3. What interventions are required?

13 Coach Knowledge of Technique
Level 1: Mini Tennis Progressions Reception Action Level 2: Mini Tennis Progressions Ball outcome PAS Reception Action Level 3: Mini Tennis Progressions Ball outcome PAS Reception, Set up, Action
